Aaron Fagan surprises Sebastian Talamantez and leans for the win in the UIL 1A Boys 3200m State Championship race
- - -
The UIL 1A boys 3200-meter championship delivered one of the most dramatic distance finishes of the state meet as Zephyr senior Aaron Fagan stormed from the chase pack over the final lap to deny Comstock's Sebastian Talamantez a long-awaited state title on the track.
Entering the race, the field carried strong expectations after recent championship performances from Ryker Haivala and Sebastian Talamantez, though Brandon Passmann's classification record of 9:16.59 from 2021 remained comfortably out of reach.
Talamantez, last year's runner-up, immediately established himself as the aggressor, taking the field through the opening lap in 1:10.82 and stringing the runners into single file down the backstretch.
The pace remained honest and controlled through the middle stages as Talamantez consistently clicked off 71- and 72-second laps. Camden Lummus of Roby and Fagan positioned themselves as the primary challengers while Brett Macias remained close behind. At 1200 meters, Lummus briefly closed the gap on Talamantez, but the Comstock senior responded immediately and regained separation. By the mile mark, Talamantez crossed in 4:46.33 with his pace still remarkably even, and by 2000 meters, he had stretched his lead to roughly 40 meters over the chase pack of Fagan, Lummus, and Macias.

But the race changed dramatically over the final kilometer. Fagan steadily reeled Talamantez back in while the leader's pace began to fade slightly over the final two laps.
Entering the bell lap, Talamantez still held the lead at 8:31.65, but Fagan had closed enough to make the race competitive. Then came the decisive move. The Zephyr senior unleashed a stunning final lap, charging home in 1:07.18 and overtaking Talamantez in the closing meters to capture the state championship in 9:48.81. Talamantez, after leading nearly the entire race, crossed just a tenth of a second later in 9:48.91 in one of the closest finishes of the meet.
Lummus secured third in 9:58.30, while Macias followed closely in fourth at 10:00.20 as four athletes broke the 10-minute barrier. Although the race never approached the classification record pace, it instead produced a tactical and emotional championship battle highlighted by Fagan's unforgettable closing surge and Talamantez's courageous front-running effort.
