Although she has raced only twice during the 2026 season, South Texas Heat Christian sophomore Elin Latta has once again rewritten the Texas record book. Latta entered 2026 already owning the Texas state record in the mile. As a freshman in 2025, she stunned the national running community at the HOKA Festival of Miles by running 4:36.74 to finish third against one of the strongest fields in the country. That performance made her the fastest Texas high school girl miler ever and immediately placed her among the nation's elite young talents.
After an outdoor season in which she did not compete on the traditional track circuit, many assumed Latta's next appearance would not come until the fall cross country season. Instead, she quietly targeted a pair of postseason national-caliber meets and turned them into historic opportunities. Her first race came at the Music City Track Carnival on May 29-30, where she won the mile in 4:38.65. The mark was one of the fastest times in the nation this year and suggested she was once again ready for a breakthrough performance.
That breakthrough came less than a week later. Returning to the HOKA Festival of Miles on June 4, Latta lined up against another elite field and delivered the race of her career. She crossed the finish line in 4:35.98, placing fourth overall while lowering her own Texas all-time record by nearly a second. In a state with a rich history of distance running, where records often stand for years or even decades, Latta has now become the rare athlete who has broken the state's mile record twice before the end of her sophomore year.
