Built to Last: How Dallas Covenant and Providence Classical Created Cross Country Dynasties
This is as much a story about culture as it is about dominance.
One could argue that without the cultures established by Coach Michael Golden of Dallas Covenant and Coach Trina Jones of Providence Classical-Spring, neither program would have achieved the sustained success it enjoys today. The numbers are undeniable - and staggering - but the true story lies in what exists behind those numbers.
When former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson said, "The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team," he could have been describing the foundations built by Golden and Jones.
Over the past decade, the Dallas Covenant's boys program has captured 10 consecutive TAPPS state championships, while the girls have added three titles during that span. Together, the Knights have amassed 13 state team championships under Golden's leadership. This October, the boys will pursue an unprecedented 11th consecutive title.
Providence Classical-Spring has built a dynasty of its own. The Paladins have claimed 11 state team championships, including six consecutive boys titles and five consecutive girls titles. Since 2021, Providence has swept every TAPPS state cross country team championship. This October, the program will have the opportunity to add championships No. 12 and 13.
What makes these accomplishments even more remarkable is that both programs have thrived despite moving between classifications. Dallas Covenant has won state championships in both TAPPS 3A and 4A, while Providence Classical has captured titles in both 2A and 3A. In 2018 and 2019, when both schools competed in TAPPS 3A, Dallas Covenant claimed the team championships in each season.
Over the past several years, I have had the opportunity to speak extensively with both coaches. While each program has developed its own identity, four common pillars consistently emerge as the foundation of their sustained excellence:
Trust and Connection: Exceptional teams are built on a foundation of deep trust and strong relationships.
Shared Responsibility: Culture is defined from the top down, but comes to life from the bottom up.
Accountability: True leadership involves holding one another accountable to shared standards, not just rules.
Consistency: A winning culture is maintained through consistent attitude, effort, and actions
