(Photo by Ryan Kelly)   Atlee senior pole vaulter Chris Pillow has made a steady and consistent rise to become the state's top vaulter this year and also join only roughly a dozen vaulters nationally who have cleared over 16 feet during the indoor season. With his 16 foot clearance two weeks ago at St. Christopher's, Pillow joined an elite and small group of four Virginia high school vaulters ever to clear over 16 feet in state indoor history. MileStat.com interviewed Pillow this past week following his win at Virginia Tech, which is one of final three schools that Pillow is looking at.
Meet Summary · Jan 18, 2011
Atlee's Marques Atkinson regained his US #1 in the 500 which he lost earlier last week with another drop in time at St. Christopher's. Atkinson is knocking on the door of becoming a VA all-time top 25 performer in the event (1:04.43 cut-off) after his 1:04.83 performance in a quad meet at St. Chris this past Saturday.   Quite a historic meet for the Atlee pole vaulters and their vault coach Kyle Bishop with two of his athletes in Chris Pillow and Cameron Overstreet successfully clearing themselves as all-time greats in the event. Pillow's 16 foot clearance ties him for #3 all-time in Virginia high school state indoor history behind only Great Bridge High greats Mike Morrison and Lawrence Johnson, while Overstreet officially becomes the Virginia state indoor pole vault record holder with her personal best clearance of 12'9".   Read more...   Meet Results

Chris Pillow's 16 foot clearance in the pole vault was one of three national caliber and state leading performances by Atlee athletes at St. Christopher's on Saturday with girls' pole vaulter Cameron Overstreet reaching a new personal best height as well at 12'9", while Marques Atkinson reclaimed his US #1 in the 500 meter dash breaking 65 seconds with his 1:04.81 performance. (Photo by Willie Riefner)   Boo Williams Sportsplex has been the home of national and state leading performances each weekend in the sprints, jumps, and hurdles but it was the distance performances which stood out on Saturday at the Suffolk Stars Invitational with Princess Anne's Lizzie Cornell winning the 1600 in a state best time of 5:04, while Grassfield senior Jeremy Greenwald became the first runner in the state to break 2:30 in the 1000 this indoor season with his US #1 2:29.76 win in Hampton. A significant PR of 6 seconds in the event for the Eastern Region cross country champion Greenwald.   Photo by Matt Shatkus   MileStat.com will start ranking on a weekly basis the top 10 performances from the previous week. The first edition will include performances from the last week of winter break with the results from the Boo Williams Winter Break Invite, F.I.T. Invitational, and CVTF Clinic Invitational. The Western Branch girls showed themselves to be head and shoulders better than the rest in the state currently in the 4x200 winning by four seconds at Boo Williams against a speedy Phoebus squad with a US #2 performance of 1:40.73 and capable of challenging the state record of 1:39.52 (Bethel - 2004) this season, but was it good enough to be the #1 performance of the week? Find out!
Meet Summary · Dec 16, 2010
Atlee pole vaulters Chris Pillow and Cameron Overstreet both achieved personal best clearances on Wednesday night at the Fork Union Mini Invite. Atlee senior Pillow, a third place finisher in both the Group AAA indoor and outdoor state meet last year, cleared a US #1 height of 15'3" at the Estes Athletic Center late into the evening. Earlier in the meet, Overstreet set off her own crowd roars and ovation after clearing 12'7" on her very first attempt to also maintain and improve her position on the national leaderboard.      Tony Green was the indoor triple jump state champion at Patrick Henry last year, but a family move now has Green at Louisa County competing in the Group AA classification. Green could become Group AA's most dominant all-around track athlete this year as complimenting his specialty of triple jump is a new personal best mark of 22'7" in the long jump at FUMA and winning a competitive 55 meter hurdles race with Atlee's Marques Atkinson (7.88) with a 7.84 clocking. Atkinson posted a solid 500 meter dash time later on the 160 meter unbanked track with a 1:07.85 performance, which was faster than his 1:07.90 win on CNU's 200 meter track this past Saturday.     The Atlee boys are one of the early front runners for the Group AAA state team titles with a nucleus of individual stars including pole vaulter Pillow, multi-eventer Atkinson, and short sprinter Trevor Ellie. Ellie has won three straight 55 meter dash races to open his season with his latest at Fork Union in a season best clocking of 6.48. The time of 6.48 ties Ellie with Oscar Smith's Joel Coleman as a state leader in the event.     Louisa County sophomore Javanique Burruss is one of the state's top returning long jumpers after nearly eclipsing 19 feet as a freshmen last year with a best leap of 18'11.50". She underperformed in the long jump at Fork Union with an 8th place finish, but did show her best performance ever in the hurdles with a 9.09 personal best victory in the 55 meter hurdles. King George senior Brittany Kersey was a state runner-up in the Group AA State Outdoor Championships last June after clearing 5'3" and has maintained her form at the start of the indoor season with another 5'3" clearance to pick up first place at Fork Union.   More to come from Fork Union including race videos and photos.   Fork Union Mini Invite #2 Complete Results   Race Videos by Brandon Miles (22 total)
Interview · Apr 14, 2010
Ever since Kyle Bishop, an 8th grader with poor eyesight, raised his hand to try out for the pole vault and heard “you don’t look like a pole vaulter” from his neighbor he has had the determination to succeed. With this mental fortitude Bishop broke the school record and had been to the State Meet twice by the end of his high school career. After just two days of practice the boy who had mocked him quit, with no successes to take credit for. Bishop’s accomplishments display what he believes are the most important qualities in every pole vaulter, mental strength and being a calculated risk taker.   MileStat.com staff writer Stacey Nobles interviewed one of the state's best coaches in the very specialized event of the pole vault.  Atlee High School has been one of the Central Region's top track programs under the direction of head coach Jim Triemplar, which a good amount of their team's points in championship season is produced from one event consistently by vault coach Kyle Bishop and his crew of vaulters.
Meet Summary · Apr 02, 2010
Atlee junior Chris Pillow cleared a personal best height of 14'6" today at the Florida Relays in Gainesville. Pillow, a third place finisher at the AAA State Indoor Championships and Central Region runner-up, had been previously been stuck at 14 feet as his all-time best. In his five previous major meets stretching back into December at a CNU indoor meet to up until his outdoor opener last week at Harrisonburg High School, Pillow had been consistent in clearing 14 feet but nothing higher. Pillow's breakthrough height down in Florida gained him a third place finish against many of the top vaulters from the Sunshine State and moves him closer to the top three vaulters currently in Group AAA in Eric Zwarycz of Mills Godwin, Matt Hazelgren of Stafford, and Matt Hoogland of Lake Braddock. All of which are seniors and not returning in 2011 like Pillow.   Pillow's Atlee High School teammate Cameron Overstreet with her 12'0" personal best will be vaulting tomorrow in the girls' competition.
