Jovan Davis was one of the top hurdlers in the state and ranked nationally coming out of Wekiva High School in 2011. Davis had offers from a who's who of college track and field programs. The whirlwind recruiting tour sent him on multiple visits from weekend to weekend and wore him out because he knew the time to make a decision was running out, but academics stood in the way.

For years now 4A Region 1 has been coined the "Region of Death" in both the cross country and track & field seasons. It is known for taking its victims with unexpected surprises and tenacious competition. In most events if you somehow manage to make it out of this Orlando regional championship, you are almost certainly bound for All-State honors. The state's best often are left home and distance athletes in particular are often forced to make decisions to focus on a single event.

When Jovan Davis transferred from Evans for his senior season this first track practice wasn’t exactly what he had in mind. Davis was in the middle of the field, hunched over, and sick. Coach Shayla Taylor says the team looked at him and said, “Welcome to Wekiva.”
Davis fought through that tough practice and has been working hard the past two months. At the Metro Conference Championships he won all four events he competed in: 110 and 300 meter hurdles, 4x100 meter relay, and long jump.
Meet Summary · Apr 17, 2011
Wekiva's Jovan Davis blazed to wins in both hurdle events, he went 14.30 at the 110H and hit a new season best 37.05 in the 300H. Logan Kruse of DP took down JL Hines of Boone 4:15.08 to 4:19, Kruse now holds on to the third spot in the rankings for the boys 1600. Other top performances included Britni Strates in the triple (38-6), a big long jump by DerRenae Freeman (18-8), and Reggie Glover with a 47.61 400. Sometimes—just sometimes—track meets remind me of cafeteria duty. This was one of them. There was just too much running (“Wait for the gun, ladies!”), cutting in (“Nicky elbowed me, so I went around him!”), tripping (“Ooooh! Did you see that one in the 100 hurdles?”), misuse of athletic equipment (“Gentlemen, please take the balls out of the infield!”), dishes flying everywhere (Was that another UFO?), and noise so deafening that I couldn’t hear the person next to me (“No, K, K! Kody with a K!) This meet even had food. (“We’ll be taking a 45 minute lunch break now.”) By the time the sun set, my ears were ringing so loud that I was beginning to “hunch”. (Or was that just another bell lap?) At any rate, the last thing I remember was thinking that I had Excedrin headache #4 (by four).
