Individual Recap: (Watch Race)

This race turned out to be a tight battle to crown the 2015 champion. The lead pack quickly established itself at the front of the race, including Ashton Endlsey coming off a win at the Hebron Hawk Invite, and Maddy Reed off a PR in a Mile TT. The two distanced the rest of the leaders through the woods and exited with a substantial gap back to the chasers. Endlsey would make a move to distance Reed in the final stages of the race and pull away down the levee to finish in a new course record and US #2 17:32! Reed finished next with a huge improvement on her time from 2014 in 17:43.

Team Recap:

This was definitely the most exciting team race of the day. Through the first mile, the Top-5 from Marcus and Southlake were each running virtually shoulder to shoulder with their 1-5 counterpart on the other team. Reed had clearly established herself at the front of the race and would bring home 1 point for Marcus, but the drama was playing out behind. Antigone Archer was having a great race for Southlake, holding onto the top pack for most of the race. Even though Marcus had Reed up at the front, Southlake was holding together extremely well as a group, and would end up with the best 1-5 compression by far (22s). The race was too close to call at the finish, but maybe the most important piece was Payton Brown(Marcus). Brown was behind the lead group through the early stages of trace, but turned it on in the second half to move up through the pack. She would finish just .5s ahead of the two top girls from Keller and place a 2nd athlete in the Top-5 for Marcus, helping her team edge out Southlake 48-54. Abbey Santoro and Julia Black both finished in the Top-10 to help lead a very young Keller squad to 3rd place finish. This was an impressive showing for the comparatively inexperienced group from Keller. Though they may not have the experience of the teams with more upperclassmen, this weekend they proved they can race with the best. Keep an eye on this team as the 2015 season plays out!
