Cruz Gomez Summer Training Blog: Building A Base!

Cruz Gomez was the highest freshmen finisher last yeat at the 6A state meet running 16:48.70 in the muddy conditions. With that time he placed 13th overall. He went on to have an equally impressive track season finishing 8th at the state meet in the 3200m running 9:27.62. He was the only underclassmen in the entire field in that event (for 6A) . Cruz is looking to bring that momentum into this year with his team by his side. Follow along with his summer training as he starts his journey to make it back to the state meet

Monday- 7/11

Monday morning 6am, the alarm goes off and I know it's time to put in some work with my teammates/brothers.

Workout - 18min AT run

For this workout, we start off with a mile warm-up and after our warm-up, we take off. Our first mile is at 5:45, our second mile is at 5:50 and the 3rd mile was a 5:35. Aafter the 3rd mile we just had to keep running until the time was over. Once we were done with the 18 minutes we walked for a bit and then we start our mile cool down

The total run was 32 minutes with the warm up and cool down,it was a total of 5 miles. Feeling a little tired after, a really good stretch and then we head on home.

In the afternoon at 6:00 pm we had easy 4 miles and it was just a recovery run at7:15 pace due to the AT run we had in the morning.

Total:10 miles for the day.

Tuesday- 7/12

This morning we had a 6-mile run. My teammates and I ran 6:55 pace and the last mile we picked it up to 6:45 pace. When we were done with the run we stretched and went home.

In the afternoon we had a 4-mile run. We ran at 7:00-minute pace, after our run we did 2 in and out's. Then we drank some water and stretched.

Total: 10 miles for the day.

Wednesday - 7/13

Today we ran 6 miles. We went 7:00 pace and had to run in the afternoon again. We started at 6pm, it was super hot around 100°F. What we hate the most is that we really don't have any shade during our run, so we have the sun over us for the entire run. After we're done with the run our coach was waiting for us with some refreshing water which was the best part! When we were done drinking water we stretched and went home.

Total: 6 Miles

Thursday - 7/14

Today we ran 6 miles again. The guys and I felt better than yesterday because we got to run in the morning which is a lot better than running at 6:00 in the afternoon. Because of this, we went 6:45 pace the entire 6 miles. After our 6 miles, we got a mile cool down in for a total of 7 miles for the day.

Total: 7 Miles

Friday - 7/15

Today we didn't run, we raced! My teammates and I run summer track every year so we had a meet today. We use these meets as time trials and speed workouts. We all ran the 800m and the 1600m today as a speed and endurance work out. After the meet, we did a little 3-mile shakeout and that was it for the day

Total: 4.5 miles

Saturday - 7/16

Today we had our long run which consisted of 10 miles, we started at exactly 6:30 in the morning which was good because it was pretty fresh. We ran at about 7-minute pace and finished in 70 minutes. When we were done we stretched really well for 10 minutes and then went home.

Total: 10 miles

Week in review

This week was good. It was mostly mileage but that's a good way to build up our base. We ran almost 10 miles every day. We all felt good on almost all of our runs, especially in the ones we thought we weren't going to do good like for example when we ran in the afternoons. It was a great week and my teammates and I are really looking forward to the ones yet to come.

Total mileage for the week: 47 miles
