All State Honor Roll: 2017 Girls Hurdles

The human Swiss Army Knife aka G'auna Edwards comes in as our #3 hurdler in the state. Edwards, the Texas Tech commit will more than likely participate in the Heptathlon at the college level and could eventually win an NCAA title before all is said and done. In 2017, she had her usual busy meet at the 6A state meet. She took fifth place in the high jump and then won a silver medal in the long jump before even hitting the track for her hurdle events. On the track, Edwards showed why she is our #3 hurdler.  She showed her strength as a dual hurdler by pulling together whatever energy she had remaining from the jumping events to take on the top girls in Texas' 6A class. Edwards pulled a fourth place finish in the 100H when she ran a wind legal 13.59. Determined to come away with another state medal, she put together a blazing performance to take third in the 300H in 41.72.

For four years, Houston Lamar's Milan Young has been one of the best hurdlers in the state and definitely in the nation the last two to three years. Young's key besides coaching, genetics, and good hurdling technique is her SPEED. Young is one of the fastest girls in the 100m and when a girl brings the type of speed she possesses....watch out! Back in May, at the 6A state meet, Young blazed to a wind legal 13.44 to take second place. That is why Young comes in as the #2 Texas female hurdler in 2017. Not many girls in Texas history have run faster than Young's 13.44. Speaking of history, Young didn't waste time leaving her mark in the record books. In her last UIL race, Young busted a 6A state record of 40.97 to take the 300H crown. Young finished her senior season with two UIL state medals, a state record and ranked in the top 10 nationally in both events when you count wind legal marks.

#1 KAYLOR HARRIS

Coming in as the top 2017 female hurdler is a girl who had never seriously hurdled before this season. Prior to this season, Mesquite Horn's Kaylor Harris was wrecking havoc on the sprint and field events. In 2016, Harris was almost on top of the state as a sprinter and jumper as she took away two 6A silver medals. Second place finishes in the 100m and long jump usually doesn't let an athlete be persuaded to pick up a different event. Well, Harris isn't a typical athlete. She was challenged to pick up the 100H and she accepted and she did it in one of the most talented and deepest fields in the nation. Texas female hurdlers already knew this season would be one of the fastest in recent Texas history and it was. Harris immediately flew to the front of the pack with big time indoor performances and she didn't slow down until she was atop of the awards stand in Austin as the elusive 6A state title and gold medal materialized. The same lethal weapon that Milan Young uses to take down her competition, Harris also possesses...SPEED. Harris doubled back after the 100H to take second place in the 2017 100m to go with her 100H gold. For a first year hurdler, being to top hurdler in Texas and one of the best in the nation isn't too shabby. Kaylor Harris is the #1 female hurdler of 2017.
