XC Season Opens Up at 31st Greenhill / Luke’s Locker 6 Mile Relay Meet

DALLAS: Once again, Greenhill School, Luke’s Locker, and Saucony are partnering up to host the 31st annual 6 Mile Relay meet at Norbuck Park in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday, August 22, 2015. The race was the brainchild of legendary Greenhill coach Tom Holodak and soon haybales and intense competition became the norm. And while champions have rotated among various schools, the meet has remained one of the longest running cross country events in Texas.

This year’s 6A/5A boys field is stacked and will include state championship teams from two states. Steve Patterson’s Jenks (OK) team will be sporting yellow singlets as the defending 6 Mile Relay 6A/5A champions. They used last year’s relay win as a way to kick off a season that ended with a dominant first place performance in the Oklahoma 6A state meet. The Southlake Carroll Dragons, under head coach Justin Leonard’s leadership, are returning to the relay as defending Texas 6A team champions. The boys will likely be paced by junior Reed Brown (7th 2014 UIL state meet, 9:00 for 3,200m). The Dragons are aiming for another state title and a return trip to the NXN meet in December. That journey will start at the 6 Mile Relay! Look for Flower Mound, Houston Strake Jesuit (10th in the 2014 UIL 6A state meet), Dallas Jesuit, Norman (OK, 5th in the 2014 6A state meet), and Wylie (11th in the 2014 UIL 5A state meet) to be in the mix, too.

Not to be overlooked, the Southlake girls team returns as Relay champs. They placed ahead of Northwest and Highland Park in last year’s relay. They were recently ranked #1 in the state in the CCCAT preseason poll. Andrew Cook’s Flower Mound girls, after finishing a strong 6th in the 2014 UIL 6A state meet, will look to challenge the Dragons. Jenks (3rd in the 2014 Oklahoma 6A state meet) and Norman (5th in the 2014 Oklahoma 6A state) meet could also be in the mix.

Darryl Bishop’s Alvarado girls will be wearing the yellow singlets as defending champs in the 4A and under division. They dominated the field last August in winning by over 90 seconds over runner-up Greenhill. Kinkaid School of Houston will look to tap into their magic on the Norbuck hills, site of their 2014 S.P.C. team championship. The boys 4A and under race seems wide open. Ryan Gillentine’s Kinkaid boys are defending champions and return with a crew of more seasoned upperclassmen. They could be pushed by perennial private school contenders St. Mark’s School, Alvarado, and Sanger (#8 in recent CCCAT 4A poll), along with Liberty Christian and a well developing Home School Athletic Association team.

The hay bales will be awaiting runners as they jump, hurdle, or stumble over those barriers on their 1.5 mile racing loop. With eight separate divisions in the Relay meet, there are plenty of opportunities for competing schools to have a memorable and successful experience.
