Class 2A State Preview: Can Sanchez Defend Her Title?

Girls 2A

Andrea Sanchez winning the Region 1 meet

In the girls race, returning two time state champion Andrea Sanchez will look to defend her crown after easily winning the Region 1 meet by over 30 seconds last week. She will have some competition from Valley Mills Freshmen Hanna Dillard, who ran one of the fastest 2A 3200m times this year at McNeil. Dillard also won Region 3 last week. Another girl who will be in the mix is Rosebud-Lott's Keauna Whitfield who finished 2nd at last year's state meet. Looking at the returning 2A girls list all of the top 5 finishers from last year's state meet will be back to challenge Sanchez. Throwing freshmen like Dillard in to that mix is going to make things interesting.

In the team battle, Sanchez will look to help her Sundown team take home the victory again. It's going to be a lot closer compared to 2014. They are going to have a battle on their hands against a young Hamilton squad led by sophomore Sydney Lengefeld. Lengefeld could challenge Sanchez for the individual crown. She has run 11:46 for 3200m. Sundown scored 42 points to win region while Hamilton dominated their region meet scoring 19 points. They swept the top four places averaging only 12:52 and running a 0:54 1-5 split. San Saba, and Gruver will also look to be podium teams this year after finishing 2nd and 4th respectively last year. Two other individuals looking to be in in the mix for an individual victory are Brackett's Cheyenne Hibbitts and Hamilton's Madeleine Mehaffey.
