Race Recap By: Nic Butts

This weekend was very exciting as we made the trek down to the great city of Austin to run at my favorite meet! My main focus was the two mile as I was really hoping to dip under the elusive sub 9 barrier.

The weather was perfect, the track was perfect, and we had the best two milers in Texas, everything was set up perfect to run fast. The sad thing is no one wanted to, we sat back like a championship style race and for once the Texas Relays did not produce nation leading times. Which sucked but it was a very valuable lesson as I need to not get so locked into a race strategy and not be able to compete. Still, it's always fun to run against these guys and just to have the opportunity to be accepted into it is awesome!

The race started out very slow and really nothing happened for the first mile as we packed up pretty well, I went through the mile at 4:48, which I was not very happy about. It was not until David made a huge move that things got pretty fun. We bunched up as we all sensed that we needed to pick up tempo and moved well together slowly inching our way back up to David. I didn't really have the best kick which sucks especially in these huge races where they are won based off of a good final lap.

This season has been a lot about having fun and enjoying my time on the track one last time as a high school runner. But, The worst thing about this weekend was saying goodbye to my friends I have made over the years as this was the last time I would be able to toe the line with them (besides college). I hope all of them have great seasons as we slowly get into the championship season!
