Many of the Dallas area teams are set to face off at the Friso ISD Invitational on Saturday, August 20th. Below are a few key things to watch this weekend as these teams prepare to show what they've got in the early season. Texas MileSplit will be at the meet taking pictures (weather permitting). Be sure to check out our preview the list of teams entered and the virtual meet previews for both genders below:
Frisco ISD Invitational Varsity Races
1. Frisco ISD Invitational Girls Varsity Race
Who Individuals :Hannah Mandell, Carrie Fish, Madison Acosta, Danielle Drogosch
Teams: The Colony (5A), Frisco Liberty (5A), Allen (6A), Plano West (6A), Frisco Wakeland (5A)
When: Saturday, August 20th, 7:00am Varsity Girls 5K
Why: This should be a good race with a lot of sold underclassmen competing. One of the biggest underclassmen to watch will be rising Frisco Wakeland sophomore Hannah Mandell. As only a freshmen she made it to the state meet last spring in track and placed 4th in a loaded 1600m race. She dropped a 5:01.49 only a second off her 5-minute flat PR. She was the first non-senior to cross the finish line in the race. Just behind her in that race was fellow rising sophomore Madison Acosta from The Colony. Acosta dropped a 5:07.78 to take 5th in that race. She was also the first non-senior in the 3200m with her 3rd place, 10:53.54 performance. Throw in rising senior Danielle Drogosch from Allen and Frisco Liberty's Carrie Fish and we've got a race. Both Fish and Drogosch are strong XC runners who will be looking to have big starts to their season. On the team side of things be sure to watch Frisco Liberty led by Fish and The Colony led by Acosta to be battling for the team title.
2. Frisco ISD Invitational Boys Varsity Race
Who Individuals: Jackson Vicary, Jake Johnson, Sergio Armendariz, Cameron King
Teams: Plano West (6A), Frisco Wakeland (5A), Allen (6A), The Colony (5A)
When: Saturday, August 20th, 7:30am Varsity Boys 5K
Why: This will be a battle between the classes. In class 6A there's the team from Allen who will look to run strong aginst inter-district rival Plano West. Both teams have strong returning runners who will look to lead the team to success. Jackson Vicary will look to lead the guys from Plano West and have a strong kick off to his senior campaign. Two guys who could stand in his way of the individual title are Jake Johnson and his teammate, Aaron Knoll. Both are seniors as well with plenty of experience in leading from the front of the pack. Cameron King should also be in the front of the pack. King led the Frisco Wakeland guys to their State title last year, and will look to start off his season on a strong note this year. No denying Frisco Wakeland could pull off a team upset aginst both the 6A teams being one of the strongest 5A schools in the state and having the home course advantage.
