McNeil Invitational Four BIG Things To Watch!

The Boys varsity Gold Race Individual Battle

Sam Worley and Daniel Viegra battling it out at last years McNeil Invite.

Teams:
When: Saturday, October 1st, 7:00am Varsity Girls 5K
Why: This race should be very good. Highlighting it will be U.S. Saucony Flo50 No.12 ranked Sam Worley. The Canyon senior won the race last year over Daniel Viegra. Worley will be looking to bounce back big after dropping out of the TAMUCC Islander Splash Invitational just a few weekends ago. He began the race with his team but dropped out somewhere after the 2-mile mark. Don't hold out for a performance from Viegra in this race, either. He is bouncing back from a sickness this week, but he will be making his debut at the Austin Westlake Invitational next weekend. Although Viegra will not be in the race we will still need to watch out for his teammates Justin Botello and Tyler McDaniel. Both seniors have been running strong this year, with Botello recently winning the Pflugerville ISD Invitational in a time of 15:20.84 with the course just shy of 5K. We also can't forget about the guys from Amarillo TascosaWes Mcphail and Briggs Wittlake. They will be racing some of the state best for the first time since Marcus I where they finished 3rd and 5th respectively. The Tascosa guys arrived in town on Thursday and previewed the course Thursday night and Friday morning, and I was told that they like the look of it.

Two more young guys making the trip down are Flower Mound's Alex Maier and Aledo's Graydon Morris. Maier is only a sophomore but he has some wins to his name already, as well as two 2nd place finishes to two of the best runners in the state. He won the Flower Mound Invitational running 15:08.84 for 5K and after resting last weekend he should be feeling primed and ready to run fast. I would not be surprised if he was up there pushing the pace or challenge Sam Worley for the lead like he challenged Reed Brown at Marcus I and Daniel Bernal at the Southlake Carroll Invitational. Morris also ran the Southlake Invitational and finished 3rd, which was by far one of the best freshmen finishes on the guys' side. The few runners I've mentioned here are only scratching the surface of the depth this field has, so keep your eyes on the course because this one's going to be fast!
