3A State Meet Preview: Repeat and a Record Breaking Performance?

 3A BOYS MEET PREVIEW

Why:  The 2016 UIL 3A Boys Texas State XC Championships will be one of the highlight races of the meet. It will feature Luling who may put on a record breaking performance. In 2015, Luling tied Kingwood for a record six consecutive state championships with a 40-70 victory over San Antonio Cole followed by Eustace and Tornillo respectively for third and fourth. This weekend, Luling is looking set the new mark of seven consecutive titles. Luling jumped out of the gates in week one for the 2016 season on fire and taking on 5A-6A programs week after week including outstanding Texas A&M CC Islander Splash and Southlake Carrol Invitational performances. Most recently, the Eagles won the Region 4-3A championship with only 27 points. Their challenge should come from the Regon 1-3A Champs Tornillo who also dominated their region with a 28 point performance. Tornillo ran exceptionally well at the McNeil Invitational, which happened to be on the state meet course. The most impressive thing about that performace was their 13 second split. If they can replicate that type of performance, they just might pose a real danger to a Luling record.

Individuals:  This race should be all Buster Roberts of Luling. Roberts is the 2015 runner up and could get his first XC individual state title. Crossing the line after Roberts could be another Luling runner in Isaac Castillo. Challenging Castillo could be one of several guys like Matthew David and Landon Duplesis both of San Antonio Cole and Region 1-3A Champ Daniel Amaya of Tornillo. Next, is when the count will begin as Luling and Tornillo runners should begin crossing the line.
