Sam Worley Sets State Record In 1600m

Sam Worley of New Braunfels Canyon (Tx.) led three guys in a chase for sub four minutes in the 1600m Saturday night at the 6A University Interscholastic League Championships. Reed Brown of Southlake Carroll and Daniel Viegra from Pflugerville Hendrickson were also in for the pursuit.

The pursuit fell a little short as a 61.72 first lap put them behind the pace. With the kick these guys are capable of, everybody was still very engaged. However, the 62.2 second lap split all but took the focus off the record and put the guys in a tactical mode for the win. As the race went on the Texas trio enlarged it's gap on the rest of the field.

Brown took the lead and carried the pace through 1300m. With 300m to go, Worley swung wide and took the lead. With Brown close in tow, the two pulled away from Viegra and the race was on. With 100m to go, it was Brown's turn to go wide and pull up on the outside of Worley. At that point the race was on and the crowd was on their feet as Worley and Brown put on another one of their classic battles one last time for their Texas fans.

At the end of it all, there was no sub 4:00 1600, however there were three sub 4:10s, two of the guys ran faster than the former state record and Worley sets the overall UIL 1600m record with his final 4:02.30
