More Austin St Stephens Athletes Impress In Week Two

St. Stephens senior athletes want to make history before they graduate. In order to do that they must win another SPC state track and field title.

As of now, things look to be off to a good start.

Last week we saw Crayton Carrozza kicked off the season for the team and he went for an awesome 1:54.25 in the 800m at the St Andrews Duo Meet. That was just the junior's way of motivating his team at the start of the year.

In week two, we saw two more outstanding St Stephens athletes continue to drive towards the team goal. At the Lake Travis Invitational, seniors Jamal January and Cameron Conyers helped carve out a definition to the season. Both guys had themselves a busy Saturday afternoon, but the work was well worth it.

January is a hurdle specialist and he competed in both hurdle races at Lake Travis. Both races had preliminaries and finals. January was able to run to the top preliminary times in both races giving him the all important premium lanes.

Jamal January Athlete Profile

With very little rest between the events, January was able to rely on his training and battle fatigue while still coming away with wins in both races going 14.49 in the 110 hurdles and then 39.35 in the 300 hurdles. The victories came over the majority UIL fields.

Much like January, Conyers also had a busy day. He competed in the long jump, 100m, and the 200m and also like January, he also competed against mostly UIL competitors.

His day started off early with the long jump competition. Taking all of his jumps, Conyers was able to take second place. That was a warm up as the 100m prelims would come up next followed closely by the 200m prelims. Conyers would run well enough to carry the top time in both events heading into the finals.

Cameron Conyers Athlete Profile

In the 100m finals, Conyers would battle with two Del Valle runners. All three guys would run all of the way side by side with Del Valle going 1-2 and out leaning Conyers who finished third.

With second and third place finishes already under his belt for the day and one race left, Conyers was determined not to settle. He was able to piece things together and say mentally tough to come home with the 200m victory.

With a great start to the season, St. Stephens is definitely on a mission for the 2018 season and must be monitored until all is said and done in May at the SPC state meet.
