The Summer Creek girls were coming off of a good 2018 season, but this year things were even better. They just had an even better 2019 season under new head coach Elton Ervin as they returned home with two UIL 6A state champions.
Last season, the Lady Bulldogs took their 4x100 relay to the state meet along with their top two sprinters Tianna Randle and Dynasty McClennon.
With both Randle and McClennon contributing, the relay was able to come away with a bronze medal as they ran 46.37 to grab the third place finish.
Randle ran an 11.74 PR at state for a sixth place finish in the 100m and McClennon ran 55.57 to finish fourth overall in the 400m.
The 2019 season was one the entire team would take things to the next level. With Randle being a senior and McClennon now a sophomore, the leadership from their experiences would end up leading the team to that next level.
Their 2018 third place finish in the 4x100 relay would improve by one spot as they finished in second overall this year. That wasn't the only significant sign of improvement for that relay, as they ran 45.24, which was not only good enough for a second place finish at state and the second best team in Texas, but that is good enough to make them the third fastest team in the country.
As for Randle and McClennon, they made drastic improvements on their time and places from last year's state meet also. In fact, they weren't just some improvements, but they ended up being state championship type of improvements.
Randle ran an 11.31 PR at the Region 3-6A Meet to earn her trip back to the state meet. Just weeks later, she would run 11.51 to win the UIL 6A 100m crown, taking a state title back to her school.
However, she wouldn't be alone in doing so as McClennon also won a state title for herself. The sophomore jumped from fourth place in the 2018 400m final to the top spot and the gold medal as she ran a 53.25 PR. She also qualified for state in the 200m where she took fifth place in a very fast race with her 23.79.
Next year, Randle will be unavailable for the Summer Creek squad as she will compete in the NCAA at UNLV. McClennon will get to defend her 400m title and try to add the 200m win. The rest of the Summer Creek girls will get to move things up yet another level next year.
