Krianne McBride is only 14 years old, but she is competing in her second high school season of track and field. Fourteen is on the young end of a high school freshman, but it is definitely young for an athlete competing on the collegiate level.
Well, that's exactly what McBride did tonight. She competed in the college Women's One Mile at the Red Raider Invitational at Texas Tech University.
This afternoon, McBride, who entered the meet with a 4:58.83 PR, finished third in the fast heat of the race. Through the first quarter mile of the race, she was in contention for the win as she came through in second place with a split of 1:10.05, less than two seconds behind the leader, Flomena Asekol from New Mexico Junior College.
McBride tried to keep the pace and stay in contention for the lead, but she fell off a little bit through the half mile. She came through with a 2:28.31 split and in third position, but fell further off the lead, giving Asekol a six second cushion.
Over the next 600m, the 14 year old would fall back to fourth place and behind the lead pace by nine seconds. However, she put in a very strong 35.25 last lap to pull back into third place and finish in that position with at 5:03.38. Asekol powered home for the win in 4:53.71 with TCU sophomore Mariah Castillo second in 4:54.97.
Being home schooled, McBride's curriculum allows her to be classified as a high schooler and is able to compete in the Home School Association. During non UIL sanctioned meets, she has been able to compete during the cross country and track and field seasons over the last year and a half.
McBride's mother, Tasha McBride said, "Even though Krianne is only 14 years old, she continues to push herself on the track and in her school work."
This indoor season, McBride has already run impressively going for season bests of 2:14.50 in the 800m and 4:58.38 in the Mile. "When she steps on the track, she has no fear," her mother said.
But, why would such a young athlete be racing runners older than she is? She clearly shows the fearlessness to run despite the age, ability, and level of her competitors.
"For 2020, she is not only looking for gold medals, but she welcomes elite competition. She desires more head to head battles with other elite level competitors regardless of age," Mrs. McBride said.
Tomorrow, she will compete in the high school division of the 800m at the Texas Tech Under Armour HS Classic. You can watch her LIVE on MileSplit.
