Chance Gibson - The Woodlands
Every year, it seems like a graduating class of stud runners exits The Woodlands program and new names step up to the plate. Well, picking the next up for the Highlander runners is kind of the trending thing to do, but it's more than that with Gibson.
The Woodlands rising senior already ascended last year as a junior; Gibson cracked the team's top seven runners by going 16:15 to start the season and then dropped his fastest times during the championship season with 15:5.43, 15:28.38, and 15:48.26 races to finish off his junior year. In his first state meet, he ran for a 64th overall finish.
In a short sample size on the track, Gibson continued to impress. He ran PRs in the 800m and the 1600m (1:58.28/4:21.02) before the COVID cancelled season.
Now a senior, Gibson will be a team leader; getting his squad prepared to push for the UIL 6A state title will be the priority. The Highlanders finished second last year and making their way back to the top of the podium will be their motivation.
Partly because he is one of the next men up, but also because the guy can flat out run, you should expect even bigger and better things to come from Gibson in 2020.
