Brynn Brown Wins Gatorade Texas ROY Award

Brynn Brown keeps racking up the hardware as this future North Carolina Tar Heel was just named the 2020-21 Gatorade Texas Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. This award is in its 36th year of honoring the nation's best high school athletes. Brown is the first Girls Cross Country Player of the Year from Guyer High School.

This award is given to the nation's most outstanding high school student-athlete for their excellence, academic achievement, and exemplary character. The 5'7" Senior from Guyer, won the 6A cross country state title this past season with a time of 16:25.89. Last June, she was also awarded the 2019-20 Gatorade Texas Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Brown is devoted to her church community, has her own healthy food blog, and is a volunteer for local children's charities. Along with all of that, she has maintained a 4.57 GPA. According to Coach Ponsonby, "this award is the culmination of what we know as the Southside Work at Guyer High School. That includes Brynn, her supportive family, teachers, coaches and our administration along with the entire Denton ISD community. It is a much deserved honor for a fine young woman."

During the fall, Brown was on a mission to win her first Texas UIL state cross country championship. It was a long journey for one of the best runners in the state that was able to elude her for three plus years. The mission was accomplished and a main part to what led to the award. Six sixteen minute 5Ks and going undefeated until a runner-up finish at the Lubbock Christian University High School XC National Invite helped seal the ROY award for Brown.

She is no stranger to being atop the podium as she won and set the record this last month at the Texas Distance Festival in Southlake Carroll with a time of 15:56.89, earning her a place in the record books for the girls high school fastest 5,000 meter in Texas. With that time, she is the 8th fastest in U.S. history for outdoor track.

At the District 5-6A meet last week, Brown won the district titles in the 1,600m and 3,200m. In a few weeks, we will continue to witness her amazing prowess on the track as she will look to complete her impressive high school career with another state track and field title or two . . . or three.
