Meet Preview: Region 2 Cross Country Championships

A Buena Vista runner finishes at the 2020 UIL state XC meet

Class 1A

This race is going down in San Angelo at Angelo State University.

When you have to bring up sisters or brothers, that means that there is a family involved and it usually doesn't mean good business. Well, for the Region 2-1A competitors it isn't, but it is for Buena Vista.

Mariana Sanchez and Ireland Sanchez are the top two returners from last year's regional championships and the 11th and 12th place finishers from the state meet. Mariana has the top time this season and should win the regional meet.

Katie Goins (Cross Plains) has the second best time coming into the race and Ummi Chanez (Marfa) was right there with the Sanchez's at regionals and state last year. Goins and Chanez will be in contention at this year's regional championships.

Buena Vista won regionals last year and was third overall at state with the front running of the Sanchez sisters, but they have all seven girls returning from last year and could have state title aspirations.

Roby, Cross Plains, Marfa, and Munday will shoot it out for the the other qualifying positions.

Tayte Cormier (Mertzon Irion County) was last year's champion and the sixth place finisher at state. This year, he should aspire to repeat as regional champ and climb the podium a couple of spots.

The regional repeat looks likely. He is the only runner entering the meet with a sub 17:00 time this season.

Johnathan Romer (Clyde Eula), Freddy Federico (Comstock), and Lexton Hernandez (Ira) should all contend, but unless they're ready and fit to go on a ride with Cormier, they might have to settle for the following spots.

Comstock should be the favorites to come out with the team victory. Clyde Eula, Monday, and Mertzon Irion County should also qualify as well.
