Meet Preview: Region 4 Cross Country Championships

McKenzie Bailey and the Georgetown girls look to qualify for the UIL 5A state meet

Class 5A

This might be the fastest race of the regional championships if the elements allow it to be.

Isabel Conde De Frankenberg (Cedar Park) is the defending region and state champ and has the second fastest time in the state at 17:07.

You'd think she is going to win for sure, right. Well, you'd be correct 99% of the time. However, also in this region is McKenzie Bailey (Georgetown) who has the third fastest time in the state at 17:08.

Frankenberg and Bailey are in the same district and got the championship season party started last week. Bailey got the win last week over Bailey 17:50 - 18:12 adding to the excitement to Monday's race.

If you think this preview is over, think again.

Anastacia Gonzales (Boerne Champion) is also under 18-minutes with her 17:54 and was the runner-up in last years race.

Boerne Champion is the back-to-back defending UIL 5A state champions and the should take the steps to a three peat beginning at regionals.

Dripping Springs and Georgetown will be the biggest challengers to the Lady Chargers. Dripping Springs has a 19:08 team average adn a 1:17 split and Georgetown has a 17:09 team average with a 3:09 split.

Georgetown's split keeps them open to being passed in the team race, but they should be safe. Canyon, Sharyland, and McAllen should be the teams chasing the fourth qualifying position.

Leander senior Jace Poole didn't have the regional meet he wanted to have last year. The elements got to him and prohibited him from advancing.

This year, Poole is having a heck of a year. He has consistently hit sub 16-minute races most of the season and comes in with a 15:32 SB.

Ethan Feinstein (San Antonio Alamo Heights), Kevin Hernandez (Donna), Ayden Granados (McAllen Memorial), are more sub 15:50 runners in the race and with four other 16:00 and under guys, this race could be very good.

The boys individual race should be an exciting one with nothing promised to anyone before the finish.

The 4-5A boy's team race could belong to anybody.

Cedar Park, Georgetown, Liberty Hill, Alamo Heights, and Canyon all have good opportunities to punch their ticket to the state meet.
