Girls Preseason 4th Team All-State And Honorable Mention

Honorable Mention

Priya Gangadharan (Round Rock Westwood

Her fall was highlighted by a third place finish at The 6A District 25 Championship. She ran well through the championship season and was a state meet qualifier

Her only other 3200 race of the season was at the Vandegrift Viper Distance Festival where she won in 10:55. From there, the Westwood star went straight into middle distance mode. Her 1600 campaign brought a personal best of 4:55 and she ran a 2:13 personal best in the 800. She concluded her junior year with a fifth place finish at the state meet.

Now that cross is back, the senior could be up for another set of state meet qualifications;

Meredith Wolfe (Round Rock)

Her first cross country season was one of steady improvement. After racing at highly competitive Austin area meets, her championship season began with an eighth place finish at her district meet which helped her team advance to regionals where she finished 19th. She finished the season brilliantly with an 18th place finish at state overall and third among freshmen in 6A.

Another year of growth and we could be watching one of the best in the Capital city.

Peyton Benson (Lucas Lovejoy)

As a key contributor to a dream season for Lovejoy, Benson's sophomore year proved she is tough, consistent and a reliable performer in the championship season's crucial moments. She was third at the district meet, 10th in Region 2 and then 13th at the state meet as Lovejoy's fourth girl.

Her results on the track were good and now a year into the Lovejoy program, championship values and strong mind are key to her individual success.

Lily Horvath (Round Rock)

While she has always been good on the track, Horvath's junior year was her first time that her quality was fully displayed in cross country. She led her team at the 6A District 25 meet with a fifth place finish. Her best race of the season came at the Region 4 Championships where she claimed another fifth place finish. She produced her best four lap performance of the season at the NSAF Outdoor Nationals. Her win in the emerging elite mile race brought her a personal best of 4:57 and set her up for a big senior year.

Jetzibe Trevino (Huffman-Hargrave)

After claiming gold at the 4A District 21 Championship and Region 3 Championship, she was 10th at the 4A state meet. The idea that she underperformed in Round Rock was verified by her race in The Woodlands two weeks later. She was 20th at the NXR South Regional. A turnaround of this magnitude creates great intrigue as to the heights she has the promise to reach her potential in her senior year.

Caitlin Garrett (Austin Vandegrift)

There are few, top athletes in the state with a more diverse resume than Caitlin Garrett. The rising junior from Austin Vandegrift has proven she can run fast over steeple barriers and rolling grass hills. In her two seasons of high school cross country, Garrett has only ever raced against the best competition around.

Her sophomore season began with a 15th place finish at the Southlake Carroll XC Invite and replicated that result a month later at the Hoka One One Mcneil Invitational. In the championship season, she won a district title in an extremely close race with Emma Wade of Vista Ridge. She then led Austin Vandegrift to a team title at the 6A Region 4 Championship with her eighth place finish. In a ferociously fast, immensely competitive 6A State Championship race, Garrett had a rare off day.

While she was well behind where she was capable of finishing, she avoided total capitulation and held on for a 69th place finish which helped her team finish 8th overall. If state was disappointing, the NXR South Regional Championships was a completely adverse result. She finished 19th in the considerably deeper field and ended the fall on a high.

Her track season was limited to just two indoor races, but her personal bests from 2020 of 11:08 over 3200 and 7:07 for the 2000 meter steeple firmly back up her cross country results and indicate great potential for Garrett's junior year.

Audrey Dunn (Southlake Carroll)

Dunn's cross country season got off to a great start as she was sixth at Southlake's home invitational and 12th at the Marcus Coach T Invitational one week later. She should be one of the more experienced runners, not only in the ever-so-tough DFW area, but in the entire state. In fact, she is one of the few state champions for Carroll who had a bad taste after their fourth place finish last year who gets to come back to avenge that state meet race.

Her 2022 track season is what makes her one of the state's best heading into the cross country season. Already having a 3200 personal best of 10:54, she made it as far as the Region 1 Championship in the event where she finished sixth in 10:58. She replicated her sixth place finish in the 1600 at regionals after winning a district title in the event. She then wrapped up her season at the North Texas 1600 where she finished third with a new personal best of 5:02.

Dunn's gem of a race Mid-March at the Texas Distance Festival is why we figure her to be one of the top harriers in the state. She ran a staggering personal best in the 5000 with her 17:33 to show her ability.

Felicity Hamilton (Klein Cain)

Her freshman season was an impressive introduction to high school cross country, and her sophomore year was a significant step up the ladder of the state's largest classification.

Hamilton's fall of 2021 had plenty of races, top three finishes, championship success and a couple of big performances beyond the bounds of the UIL. She finished anywhere from third to eighth in each of her regular season races before moving into the championship season.

At the 6A District 15 championships she edged out her team teammate for the silver medal before earning a spot at the state championship with her eighth place finish at the Region 2 meet. At the state meet the race got blown open early because of the blazing pace Natalie Cook set off at. The pace proved too much for several girls who seemed set to finish near the front. While many faded far from their projected finish, Hamilton weathered the early aerobic assault to finish eleventh, thereby improving on her freshman year by 12 places. As admirable as eleventh in the state may be, the truly outstanding component of her campaign was that  her 17th place finish at NXR South secured a spot in the All South Region Team to go along with her All-State performance. She wrapped up her season with a 50th place finish at the Eastbay South Regional having thoroughly demonstrated her fitness and ability and ability to keep her head in the highest pressure environments.

If she is fit for this fall, she will be one to keep in mind when gun goes off in November's championship races.

Ella Perry (Killeen Harker Heights)

As a sophomore, Perry made her first appearance at the state meet and made significant improvements on the track from her freshman year. In her first cross country season she raced 11 times and won eight. Her biggest win was at the 6A District 12 Championship where she put 28 seconds in between her and second place. At the extremely competitive Region 2 Championship, Perry finished 13th and comfortably secured individual qualification for the state meet. In Round Rock, Perry managed a 28th place finish- a solid result for her 6A State Championship debut.

Her track season was a constant stream of wins and fast times through the Region 2 Championship. During her run of six consecutive 3200 meter victories, her times hovered within the range of 11:16 and 11:28. She also won the 1600 at each of those meets, never running slower than 5:22. After claiming gold at the district and area meets in both events, Perry brought her best to the regional meet. Clearly having peaked at the right time, Perry unleashed the full force of her fitness as she ran a huge personal best in the 3200 (10:59) to take fourth, then came back and finished fifth in the 1600.

While she is yet to add a big signature win or time to her resume, Perry demonstrated exceptional consistency with fast times and wins. She also has experience at UIL Championships under belt and seemed to produce her best in those big races.
