It's no surprise that Region 1-6A had the best teams in the state when it came to top end talent and depth. Six of the top-10 ranked teams in the CCCAT Coaches postseason poll were competing in the meet. That includes No. 1 ranked Southlake Carroll and No. 2 ranked Flower Mound.
To say the least, the meet did not disappoint.
Flower Mound took the regional win with a 18:12 team average, topping Carroll by one point. Carroll netted a 18:21 team average. This sets the stage for perhaps an unprecedented UIL 6A state meet matchup.
Despite an outstanding win, Flower Mound didn't produce a perfect race. Despite Samantha Humphries running away from the field in the first mile to take the win, and usual No. 3 runner Alexandra Fox finishing third overall with a 17:25 PR, the team has room for improvement and running even better. Junior Nicole Humphries ran her slowest time of the year by -20 seconds finishing sixth overall.

Carroll wasn't perfect either. The squad ran without Alexandra Walsh, who has been their No. 1 runner all season long. Senior Ava Bushaw finished second overall with in a time of 17:25 to pace the Dragons. They ran a season low 1:44 split and have the second toughest course of their schedule coming up next.
Last year was at the state meet was the worst race of the season for Carroll. It cost them a shot to defend their state title and the first time they didn't end the season on the podium. This year, that performance came a week early and they were only one point behind the defending state champions. They have an opportunity to bounce back this time with state coming up.
Despite less than desired team runs, both squads survived the regional championships, which is known to be the last meet of the year for individuals and teams who aren't able to execute.

Region 1 is known as the "Region of Doom," and gives little room for error on one of the roughest courses in the state.
Of the six ranked 6A teams going into the meet, only the top two made it out of the region. Formerly ranked El Paso Franklin put together a solid race to finish third with a 48 second deviation between their first four runners.
Plano West also put together a solid executed race. West hadn't sniffed the rankings at any point of the year, but the proved that if a team does have a good day or their best day they can capitalize on teams who don't have good days. They finished fourth place and just one point ahead of No. 5 ranked Highland Park. Franklin and Plano West also topped No. 7 Prosper, No. 8 Northwest Nelson, and No. 10 Northwest Eaton.
Next up, with even more uncertainty and possible more dramatic finishes is the UIL state meet. Stay tuned and don't miss a beat!
