Caden Leonard crosses the finish line as the new UIL 6A Boys 3200m state meet record-holder

The UIL 6A boys 3200-meter championship may be a step in producing the greatest distance feat in UIL history as Southlake Carroll senior Caden Leonard looks to complete his second consecutive 6A triple crown. While that is still to be determined later this evening, the Carroll senior began with a record-breaking performance against perhaps the deepest field ever assembled at the state meet.
Entering the race, Leonard already owned the Texas all-time best performance with his 8:45.1 from two weeks ago and was chasing both Reese Vannerson's 6A state meet record of 8:49.10 and another championship sweep after winning the cross country title. Much like many previous years, victory was far from guaranteed. The field included sub-8:50 performers such as Denton Guyer sophomore Ruel Newberry, El Paso Eastwood sophomore Noah Garcia, and Bridgeland senior Griffen Saacke, creating a championship race loaded with national-level talent.
From the opening gun, the pace immediately reflected the quality of the field. Newberry led the first lap in 1:08.14 with Leonard and Saacke closely behind, while Garcia and The Woodlands junior Elton Martin stayed firmly attached to the lead pack. The front group remained tightly bunched through 800 meters in 2:13.09 and continued rolling through controlled but fast laps as they reached 1600 meters in 4:26.84, still with nearly the entire lead pack in contention.
Unlike many championship races that break apart early, this one evolved into a sustained battle of patience and positioning among elite runners who were all capable of closing hard.
The race intensified dramatically after 2K when Garcia surged to the lead and attempted to press the pace. Newberry quickly responded, reclaiming the front while Leonard moved around Garcia to keep the Region I runners running 1-2-3. Through 2400 meters and into the final kilometer, the front five remained tightly connected as the race accelerated lap by lap. Then, with just over one lap remaining, Leonard made the decisive move. Splitting 7:46.60 through 2800 meters, the Southlake Carroll star surged away from Newberry and Garcia entering the bell lap.
Even though he shut it down and cruised to the finish on the final straightaway, Leonard's move had already broken the field. He crossed the finish line in a stunning 8:48.81, breaking Vannerson's state meet record by nearly three-tenths of a second and becoming the first athlete in meet history to break 8:49 in the championship race.
Ironically, Leonard's first appearance at the UIL state meet came in the same race in 2023 when Vannerson set the previous record, and Leonard finished last in that final as a freshman. Three years later, he returned to rewrite the record book himself.
Behind Leonard, Newberry delivered an incredible race of his own to finish second in 8:53.23, while Garcia followed closely in 8:53.74 as all three athletes dipped under 8:54. Martin added another sub-9 performance in fourth at 8:58.34, and Andrew Esparza completed a remarkable top five in 9:03.34. In total, four runners broke nine minutes, and five ran under 9:04, making the race arguably the deepest 3200-meter final ever contested at the UIL state meet.
