Macy Wingard wins her first track and field title
- - -
The UIL 6A girls 3200-meter championship featured one of the most anticipated distance matchups of the state meet as defending champion Rowan Saacke of Bridgeland returned to face three-time cross country state champion Macy Wingard of Denton Braswell. With Natalie Cook's 6A state meet record of 9:48.25 still standing from 2022, the race entered Austin more focused on championship tactics than record pace, especially with windy conditions affecting much of the meet.
Early on, Wingard immediately established herself at the front, leading Saacke and Bridgeland junior Hope Smith through the opening lap in approximately 1:20. The pace steadily increased from there as Wingard and Smith began separating from the field while battling the headwind on the backstretch.

By the end of the third lap, the lead duo had already stretched the field significantly, crossing 1200 meters in 3:49.74 after a strong 1:15 third lap. Wingard continued controlling the race through the mile in an impressive 5:06.64 despite the difficult conditions, while Smith remained attached just behind her. At 2000 meters, the pair had built nearly an 85-meter gap over the chase pack led by Southlake Carroll senior Luna Gutierrez and El Paso Franklin's Emily Orr. It was there that Wingard began making her decisive move, gradually opening daylight between herself and Smith while maintaining remarkably even pacing.
With one lap remaining, Wingard held roughly a 60-meter lead while Smith had shifted focus toward holding off Gutierrez for second place. The Denton Braswell senior never looked back. Running confidently over the final 400 meters, Wingard powered home to win her first UIL track state championship in 10:19.32, capping an outstanding senior season after previously finishing runner-up in the event. Smith finished second in 10:36.81, giving Bridgeland another podium finish, while Gutierrez closed strongly for third in 10:44.77.
The race also showcased the depth of 6A distance running, with Orr and Katy sophomore Vienna Fish both breaking 10:57. Defending champion Rowan Saacke, after helping set much of the pace early, faded over the final kilometer and finished sixth in 11:11.67. In the end, the championship belonged to Wingard, whose front-running strength and ability to maintain pace in difficult conditions proved too much for the field to overcome.
