BOERNE, TEXAS - The Boerne Champion
Chargers hosted an exciting and high-quality meet on Saturday. The meet was
highlighted by the field events, including some of the top throwers in the San
Antonio area including Rafe Clendenin of Brandeis and Tori Adams of Boerne.
The meet opened with the distance medley relay which consists of a 1200-800-400-1600 set up relay legs. The host Chargers won the girls event after freshman Beth Leachman ran a 5:05 mile split to overtake Canyon in the final 800 meters. It was only a taste of what was to come for Leachman later in the meet. On the boys side, Canyon dominated the race and won in 11:00.00.
In the field events, Brandeis senior Lokey Aguero-Munoz had a low-key, sorry for the pun, amazing day. He won the triple jump with a 43-3.75 mark and followed that up by going over 22-feet to win the long jump and then he nabbed third place in the high jump for a total of 26 points on the day.
The girls jumping events saw Brandeis senior Alyssa Rodriguez show off with a nice double victory in the long jump and triple jump. She won the long jump by two feet at 18-5.5 and the triple jump by nearly four feet at 38-3.5. The high jump saw Boerne's Kendall Lemm take the title with a 5-4 clearance.
Over in the throwing events the biggest competition took place in the boys discus. The loaded field did not disappoint with a great duel between the top three. In warm-ups it looked like Clendenin would be the winner, but when the real throws took place it was Ennis' Heath Vernor who edged him out, 171-5 to 170-0. It was the second straight week that Vernor traveled South to go against San Antonio competition. Third place was wrapped up by Champion's Connor Warzecha who had a 164-5 mark.
In the boys shot put, Canyon's Aidan Peddycoart continued to show his strength in the event. He won the meet with a 52-0.25 toss putting him well ahead of the rest of the competitors. Champion's Riley Wampler and Clendenin took second and third with each throwing over 47-feet.
The girls throwing events gave a peak at Boerne's Tori Adams, a Texas Tech signee, and she did not disappoint. She hurled the shot put 42-1.5 for an easy win and followed that up with a 135-11 mark in the discus. She ranks at the top of both lists in the San Antonio Metro area.
The boys pole vault was another meet highlight with three over 14-feet. Luke Rossi and Brooks Jones, both Boerne Champion juniors, cleared 14-0 before bowing out. Alamo Heights senior Leo Bowen pulled out all the stops and ended up clearing 16-0 and is now the #2 vaulter in the whole State.
Heading back to the track, Brandeis junior Hayden Scott ran the top 3200-meter time in the area with a 9:40.94 and started a trend of strong distance races. In the girls 800, Jadelyn Malesich of Brandeis and Alexia Tiscareno Macias of Canyon dueled to the finish with Malesich getting the nod although both broke 2:20. The boys had two runners break 2:00 in winner Luis Tovar of Champion and Joseph White of Alamo Heights.
Later on in the meet, Leachman wowed everyone with her fantastic 4:58.62 in the 1600 meters which is #2 in the State behind only Edinburg North's San Juanita Leal. Three other girls followed Leachman in under 5:20 for a very fast early season race. The boys mile saw Canyon's Nathan Aguilar top Scott with a winning time of 4:25.32.
The Boerne Champion girls dominated the sprint events winning the 4x100 relay, 100 hurdles, 100 meters, 4x200 relay, 300 hurdles, 200 meters and finally the 4x400 relay. Erin Fallon was part of the winning 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay and the 100 hurdles while her sister, Kendall Fallon, won the 300 hurdles and was on the winning 4x400 team. Vanesa Gonzalez was the top 100 sprinter with a time of 12-flat and she was on the 4x100 and 4x200 teams.
The boys 4x100 meter relay was a great race with rivals Boerne Champion and Boerne going head-to-head for bragging rights. Boerne made a late charge but it was the Chargers who held on to win by 2-hundredths of a second. The Somerset boys impressed in the 4x200 relay running a 1:31.97 behind the team of Ethan Vasquez, Dallas Hobbs, Ruben Moreno and Jaden Faz.
The 110 hurdles saw James Voss of Brandeis make a case to be considered one of the best in San Antonio. He ran 14.58 without it being a perfect race. In the 300 hurdles, Benjamin Blomqvist took first in 40.35 after finishing as runner-up in the 110 hurdles.
The meet finished with the Champion boys running a quality time of 3:26.89 in the 4x400 relay to win by five seconds. Blomqvist ran the anchor leg while Ranger Lewis, Luke Rossi and Joshua Hierholzer joined him in the victory.
