The UIL 1A state meet is this Saturday and it it's anything like what we saw last year, it could be a record free fall. Several of last year's record breakers are back and if the regional championships are any indicator then at least three state meet records are doomed.
Check out our meet preview of events to watch and individuals to keep an eye out for this weekend.

- Taytum Goodman - 3200m has never competed in the 3200m at the state track meet despite winning in the distance three times already im cross country. She has the top seed, but will have to contend with the defending state champion Kaylee Bezio (Graford). The UIL 1A state meet record is 11:28.10 and she went 11:11.42 in Levelland at the regionals, so keep an eye on the record going back to Springlake Earth.
Goodman also holds the UIL 1A state meet record in the 800m at 2:17.26 from last year's finish. She could lower her record as she ran 2:15.21 in the regional championships. The same goes for her in the 1600 with her 5:06.78 record mark and her 5:04.03 from Levelland two weeks ago.
She dropped the 400m for the distance trifecta; lets see if she can turn in three new state meet records.
- Boys 3200m
With Brandon Passmann and Isaiah Billingsley having graduated, we knew a new 1A distance leader would get to step up. We didn't know it would be this wide open. Last year, after Passmann's win, two freshmen medaled with second and third place finishes, another was fourth, and then two more were amongst the nine qualifiers. There were two others who returned for their senior season this school year.
However, only last year's sixth place finishers in Cole Fenhaus (Fayetteville) and Brandon Timms (Tilden McMullen County) who finished eighth last year are back in this weekend's race. It's somebody's turn ... who will it be?
- Girls 100 Meter Hurdles
- It'll be another Alli Scott (Moran) and Makenna Byrd (Wildorado) showdown in the girls 100 meter hurdles. Last year Scott won the state title while Byrd won in 2021. They're both seniors and surely they want to go out on top. This could be an epic match up!
- Girls Sprints
- Anna Hudson (Miami) is the UIL 1A state meet girls 100m record holder thanks to her 12.24 from last year and in the 200m when she went 25.48. Those times of course won her the title and she is back and could win again and lower her record marks.
- Boys Sprints
- Braedyn Woodward (Milford) and Albert Esquivel (Bruni) finished second and third in the 100m at last year's state meet. Last year's state champion graduated and left the vacancy. Can Woodward or Esquivel assume the winning position?
- Paducah 4x200 Relay
- The Paducah boys 4x200 relay set the UIL 1A boys state meet record in 2021 with a winning time of 1:29.41. Last year, they were upset by Turkey Valley and they had to settle for second place. Senior Cord Piper is the only remaining runner from the record setting squad in 2021 and they come in with the fastest regional qualifying mark of 1:29.69. Can Piper and Paducah leave Austin with redemption, another state title, and possibly a new 1A state meet record?
- Boys 400m
- Boys 400m defending state champion Baret Jackson (Rankin) is back to capture another championship. However, he'll have to fend off Jayton sophomore Griff Reel who has the fastest regional time of 50.87.
- Girls 300 Meter Hurdles
- Last year, Camdyn Childs (Barksdale Nueces Canyon) broke Makenna Byrd's UIL 1A state meet record when she used a 46.07 to win the title. She is back, but will have to hold off freshman Maddie Francis (Silverton) who ran 46.28 at the regional meet.
- Boys Throws
- The UIL 1A boys discus state meet record is 171-11 and we could see that go down. Defending champion Joseph Bond (Cherokee) already crushed the 171 mark at regionals by nearly five feet when eh threw 176-10. He's also the 1A state leader and comes in with a 56-10 regional throw. He was runner-up last year in the shot, but two gold medals are realistic this season.
- Boys High Jump
- Can anyone jump with Elijah Gaines (Van Horn)? He is the reigning defending high jump state champion and yet another state meet record holder. He jumped 6-10 last year at the state meet to get the record. Will he take it higher?
- Boys Triple Jump
Henrietta Midway senior Christian Coker is the defending UIL 1A boys triple jump state champ and the meet record holder at 45-1. However, he'll have to really pop some good jumps if he wants to win again and keep his record.
Amareion Bookman (Goodrich) wasn't at the state meet last year, but that mean he is not a major threat to the throne. He jumped 45-2 at regionals, which is an inch farther than Coker's state meet record. This could be a back and forth jump competition that could be more than worth the time to watch it.
