5A Girls 100 Meter Hurdles

Alexandra Harber, Kelis Jules, Amani Graham and Kailyn Head all returned from last year's final 5A Girls 100m Hurdle final. Despite that, it was Frisco Heritage's Kaylah Braxton who brought home the gold medal. Braxton was the first runner to the first hurdle and held her lead from there as Head tried to run her down.

Braxton crossed the tape in 13.67 and the sophomore from Denton Ryan, Head, finished in 13.83 in a clean race. Harber, of McKinney North, added a second straight bronze medal in the event after setting a new 5A meet record in the pole vault earlier in the day.

Defending state champion Kirin Chacchia (Frisco Heritage) entered with the fastest seed time of 41.89, which was over a second and a half better than the next fastest time. She would take on a couple of girls who had momentum coming off the 100 meter hurdles.

Nevertheless, Chacchia went through the first hurdle with Kailyn Head from Denton Ryan and then took off with only Laila Payne (Houston Carnegie Vanguard) running stride for stride with her.

Coming off the turn, it was Payne with the lead and only three barriers left. Chacchia gave an urgent chase, but Payne was up for the challenge and held off the state champion for the upset.

Payne ended with a blazing 41.96 win ahead of Chacchia in 42.20, and Amani Graham (Cedar Park) was third with a time of 43.31.
