TAPPS 2023 State Meet Recap

 TAPPS 1A

Girls

Last year, it was a senior taking home the 1A girls individual state title when Lesli Salas (Cornerstone Christian) took the win in 11:54. This year, it was an infusion of youth running to the front.

Not only was it a freshman taking the first spot and championship position, but it was another freshman who finished runner-up.

Hallie Collins (Azle Christian School) took this year's win in 13:32 outpacing Hannah Murphy (Texoma Christian) by three seconds who finished in 13:35.

The runner-up and third place finishers from last year's race Rylan Lonergan and Lauren Fulmer, both from Dallas Coram Deo Academy were able to run back into the top-five with their third and fourth place finishes this year.

Junior Christiane Griggs (Houston The Briarwood) improved from her ninth place finish in 2022 to place fifth this year.

Texoma Christian won the team title with a score of 31 points. They ran a 15:33 team average with a 3:21 deviation from their first through fifth runner.

Victory Baptist Academy placed second with 62 points to outpace Houston The Briarwood by two points and Harvest Christian Academy and their 69 point total.

Boys

San Angelo Cornerstone Christian duo of David Salas and Charlie Glass were born to run at the TAPPS state cross country meet. Salas won back-to-back-to-back state titles yesterday when he ran a 17:37.

As far as Glass, he turned in his second straight runner-up finish at the TAPPS state meet. The senior turned in a tenth place finish as a freshman and then cut that in half as a sophomore when he crossed the finish line in fifth.

Another duo of teammates were the third and fourth place finishers. Levi Karns and Robert Welling of Spring Founders Christian School were the third and fourth, which were crucial positions for the team battle.

Noah Burns (Victory Baptist Academy) was fifth place in 18:31 and his teammate Bailey Hughes was just two seconds behind in 18:33 for sixth place.

Last year, it was Victory Baptist getting the narrow five point victory 61<66 to capture the team title over Spring Founders Christian School. Although it was another slim margin of victory this year, Victory Baptist again pulled out the win.

This year's margin of victory was still single digits, but at nine points, it gave them a little more breathing room over Spring Founders 35<44.

After the third runner, Spring Founders was winning in the team standings by two points, 13<14, but after the fourth runner, it was Victory Baptist with the lead by two points, 22<24. The fifth runner was the breathing room for Victory Baptist and the seal for another state title.
