Every week we will bring you members of either the freshman and sophomore classes who are having a good season and who we believe might become leaders or stars in the sport
2024 Future Stars Articles
Texas Future Stars Edition IV
This is our first Future Stars for the 2025 track and field season. During the cross country season, we started this feature consistently to acknowledge some younger athletes. This track and field season, we will continue to highlight the freshman and sophomore class runners who are quickly making a name for themselves with their running, jumping, throwing, and vaulting.
In this edition, we have a couple of runners who we identified during the cross country season based on their on grass performances. So far, there are a couple of them who are already on fire indoors and they have achieved getting our attention in the early goings of the season.
Girls Future Stars
Elin Latta (South Texas Heat Homeschool)
Latta is an undeniable talent and has been for a couple of years now. Competing at the high school level, she was quick to get off to a hot start during the cross country season. In the end, the freshman qualified for the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) to compete against the best distance runners in the country.
She is already off to a great start indoors with her 4:43.92 run in the mile last weekend in Chicago. At the CYUP Misfits Invite Presented by HOKA she opened up and won against national level talent, many of them upperclassmen.
That indoor performance is just outside the top ten outdoor performance in Texas girls track and field history.
Jasmine Ross (Clute Brazoswood)
Ross has already proven that she can jump with the best of them. A 19-10.25 performance at the North Texas Showcase 2024. The Brazoswood frosh ran 7.72 in the 60m at the 2025 Texas High School Indoor Championship to work on her runway speed.
Ross didn't wait until track season to get started, she ran a full cross country season in the fall.
Madison Brooks (Track Houston)

Eleanor (jellybean) Kazanjian (Kingsville King)
Kazanjian has quite the nick-name 'Jellybean', but what isn't funny is how serious she has been in this short season in the 60-meter hurdles. The frosh went 8.93 at the 2025 Texas High School Indoor Championship in her opening 2025 event. The South Texas runner then rattled of several improvement runs in Houston at Carl Lewis when she went 7.79, 7.83, and 7.90.
Boys Future Stars
Ja'Juan Allison (Humble Summer Creek)
Dillon Mitchell (CE King)
The hype on this freshman isn't smoke being blown; it is full force facts based on how he has already run and how the numbers stack up historically. Mitchell ran 6.74 and 7.82 in the 60m at Texas A&M along with a 22.1 in the 200m.
Mitchell's 6.74 in the 60m final in College Station is the new freshman class record, eclipsing the preview mark of 6.78 which was held by Jerald Watson (Central Catholic, Morgan City, LA) from 2001. Per World Athletics Hub, that ties him as the No. 15-year old ever in the World behind phenom Divine Iheme - 6.71.
Mitchell has also found success on the football field in his freshman season at slot receiver. He recently ran 4.37 in the 40m and is climbing up the rankings in the football rankings.
Ruel Newberry (Denton Guyer)
Newberry had a fantastic cross-country season beginning by setting a freshman class record and then ending the year with a RunningLane Championships national championship win.
So far this track season, he ran a US No. 7 9:09 in the 2025 Texas High School Indoor Championship two-mile and followed that up with a No. 5 ranked 8:27 3,000m run at the Arkansas High School Invitational.
Chinweoke Onwuchekwa (Track Houston)
We don't quite know what school Onwuchekwa attends yet, but he is another freshman sprinter who is talented. He ran 6.82 and 6.87 in the 60m at Texas A&m in his first indoor high school meet. All he did last week at Carl Lewis was go 6.77, 6.82 and 6.85. He will be a sprinter to watch this season and he added a 22.00 in the 200m this indoor season.
Da'Juan Allison (Humble Summer Creek)
Like his previously mentioned twin brother, Da'Juan made our list in the fall and with his running in College Station and Houston, we've been consistently impressed by the sophomore.
Allison ran 4:23.55 at A&M to finish fifth in the mile against stiff competition. A week later in Houston the other day, he sped things up and dropped his time to 4:20.13 to win the mile at Carl Lewis.
