Texas Boys Future Stars: Area Championship Edition

Top Freshman And Sophomore Texas Boys Performances This Season

As the track and field season continues, it ends for many of the younger UIL athletes and their individual adventures.

Some of them are continuing their journeys as are the private and parochial school athletes.

Check out the list below and see the who some of the younger athletes who just might be the top dawgs in the near future.

Andrew Esparza (Round Rock)

Esparza (pictured) is a monster! The Round Rock Dragon can run it all.

As a sophomore, Esparza has personal best performances of 1:56.44, 4:14.18, and 9:18.55. He finished third in the 800m and the 1,600m at the UIL 6A - District 25 meet and was second in the 3,200m.

Esparza dropped the 800m at the Area Championships, but was third in the 1,600m - 4:17.86 and fourth in the 3,200m - 9:26.60 and is headed to the Region 4-6A championships in both.

Kaegan Morton (Barbers Hill)

Morton is having a great freshman season. He has some wild marks on his resume, but that isn't abnormal for Texas sprints thanks to the winds and lack of wind readings.

Despite the 10.3s and 21.13 type runs, the Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill sprinter does have wind legal or wind reading makes that are still impressive. He ran 10.75 and 21.71 at the Texas A&M Bluebonnet High School Invitational.

Jackson Kerth (Kerrville Tivy)

Kerth is only a sophomore, but he is one powerful and explosive young human being. He didn't have great days in his freshman season at the UIL 5A - District 26 and didn't advance, however, he has been phenomenal since.

Kerth tossed a 58-0.50 best in the shot put at the Nike Indoor Nationals. Outside, he has since thrown 61-8.50 and 164-90 in the discus.

He won both events this year's UIL 5A - District 26 and was second in the discus at the UIL 5A - Area 25-26 and third in the shot put.

Daevion Lewis (Manor New Tech)

Lewis is a freshman at Manor New Tech, but this kid can do it all. He is a complete track and field athlete and could be one of the most outstanding young multi athletes if he chooses that route.

Lewis has marks like 21.98, 51.72, and 6-2 on his resume. However, the big hoopla about Lewis should be his long jump abilities.

Lewis has several 22 and 23 marks, but his 24-3 to win the UIL 4A - District 25 and his 24-6.50 at the UIL 4A - Area 25 & 26 makes it look like he is just getting warmed up.

Justin Bordelon (Liberty Hill)

While Bordelon didn't make it past districts last year, he has already accomplished and surpassed that this season. Bordelon won the discus and was second at the UIL 5A - District 25 meet.

He had the exact same finishes at the UIL 5A - Area 25-26 area meet and is moving on to the Region 4-5A meet. His best throws were a 171-3 at district and a 58-1.50 yesterday at the area meet.

Leo Brasil (Round Rock)

Basil is the second young Round Rock middle distance/distance star on this list. Brasil has PRs of 1:57.31 and 4:19.31 this year. He advanced to the area round in the 800m and the 1,600m.

Brasil was fourth at the UIL 6A - Area 25 & 26 meet in the 800m and will compete at the Region 4-6A meet.

Jayson Smith (Richmond Randle)

Richmond Rosenberg and Randle frosh has some windy performances on his resume, but we did get to see him run heads up with one of the top sprinters in Texas, Justin Stewart.

Smith is fast, but more importantly, he is strong and make a great sprinter. Smith has windy 200m performances of 21.07 and 21.63, but a 22.27 indoors run shows he has that get up and go in him.

Not crossing the finish line any lower than third place in any varsity 100m race this season. That says a lot for a freshman.

Charles Anderson (Dallas Carter)

Carter is similar to another DFW area frosh who we've highlighted as a future star in Carson Caldwell (Crowley). Anderson excels in the 400m and 800m, and is the UIL 4A - District 11 champ in both events.

The freshman ran 48.31 and 2:10.68 and is competing in the Area Championships this week. Add that to his 48.24 and 1:58.26 PRs and you can see why Anderson is one of the possible middle distance leaders of the future.

Tyson Cotchery (El Paso Franklin)

El Paso is a long way from everything not in El Paso. In fact, Cotchery went even further away to notch his 1:55.18 PR in the 800m. Arizona's top meet, the Chandler Rotary Invitational is where he went to get his personal best.

A good half miler is a fast half miler and Cotchery is just that. The sophomore has three sub 50-second 400m races including his 49.34 PR. He will compete in both in the area round as he qualified in both.

Elton Martin (The Woodlands)

We acknowledged Martin during the cross country season, but like several youngsters crushing it on the track this spring, he demands another naming.

The sophomore Highlander shows his range on the track as his 9:10 3,200m PR is impressive, but his 4:16.60 and 1:58.79 in the shorter distances are shows he'll be one to reckon with in the rest of the qualifying season.

Martin is competing in the 1,600m and 3,200m at the area meet today after finishing second and first at the UIL 6A - District 13.
