Salado Championship Aspirations Off To Great District Start

Seth Anderson and McCall Boyd win District 24-4A championships

District 24-4A Results

Here's how District 24-4A shook out on a humid, fast morning, with three teams on both sides punching tickets to Corpus Christi and a pack of dangerous individuals along for the ride.

Salado left little doubt in the girls' two-mile, winning with just 24 points behind a ruthless wave of red. Sophomore McCall Boyd defended her district title in 12:09.71, then seniors Cade Harris (12:33.14) and Sydney Engleking (12:48.51) stacked 3-4, freshman Jemma Camp was 7th (13:00.45), and Hayden Griesemer closed the door in 9th (13:06.89). That produced a 12:43 team average and a tight 0:57 1-5 spread, exactly the kind of profile you expect from the No. 2-ranked 4A squad in the CCCAT poll and last year's state bronze medalists.

Jarrell out-dueled Burnet for second by a single point, 78-79, and intriguingly, both held the same 13:47 average. For Jarrell, McKenzie Jennings (5th, 12:57.67), Gianna Rivera (13th, 13:27.86), Desaray Benavidez (14th, 13:32.84), Jakayla Kenney (19th, 14:09.05), and their No. 5 sealed it with a 1:50 split.

Burnet countered with runner-up Asah Roy, a terrific 12:13.13 that caps a season featuring 11:51 and 12:11 highlights, plus Kamila Palacios (16th, 13:52.18), Erica Flores (17th, 13:59.28), Abby Bennight (23rd, 14:22.21) and Josie McDavid (25th, 14:30.84) for a 2:17 split.

Georgetown Gateway (4th, 102) and Lampasas (5th, 112) both flashed depth-Gateway's 1:26 gap was tidy-while Marble Falls (6th, 116) put multiple athletes in scoring position.

Individually, Salado dominated the top 10: Boyd's title was followed by Harris (3rd), Engleking (4th), Camp (7th), Annalee Bryant (10th, 13:10.82), and Mayson Morreale right there in 11th.

Leah Phillips (Lampasas) broke up the party in 6th (12:59.41), Reese Massey (Marble Falls) grabbed 8th (13:05.66), and Lily Saenz (Georgetown Gateway) was 12th (13:26.14) and best of the next wave for non-advancing teams.

On the boys' side, No. 4-ranked Salado delivered an even sharper hammer: a 1-2-3-4-10 finish for 20 points, a 16:39 average, and 1:17 spread over three miles.

Sophomore Seth Anderson won in 16:00.20, senior Coulson Boyd (last year's 4A state 13th) was runner-up in 16:23.13, and track speedster Daniel Anderson (16:48.02) and Cash Drigalla (16:49.47) made it a four-man parade before Brody DeLukie (10th, 17:17.69) slammed the door; Lane Johnson (13th) and Jackson Camp (21st) were their displacers.

Burnet took second with 55 points and a compact 1:05 split as Adan Carreon (5th, 16:54.64), Clark Yanez (7th, 17:05.83), Isaac Vega (8th, 17:12.50), Christopher Hernandez (17th, 17:48.67) and Jose Flores (18th, 17:59.87) formed a tough pack.

Lampasas (3rd, 75 points) was steady and balanced, John Keyes (6th, 16:59.60), Royce Clary (14th, 17:31.47), Cohen Watson (16th, 17:41.94), Carlos Rodriguez (19th, 18:13.22), Juan Rodriguez (20th, 18:15.77)-for a 17:44 average and 1:16 gap.

Marble Falls (4th, 91 points) produced a strong top three in Graham Goggans (11th), Joaquim Edwards (12th), and Owen Martin (15th), and they'll send multiple individuals forward. Rounding out the boys' top 10 were Justin Murphy (Jarrell, 9th), and Salado's DeLukie (10th).

Note: in UIL, athletes from non-advancing teams qualify as individuals to region. They can chase individual regional/state titles even if their team does not advance.

What it means for Region IV:

Salado's girls roll into Corpus Christi as the defending regional champions with an even tighter scoring gap than a year ago. With Asah Roy trending well (11:51-12:11-12:13 this fall), Burnet has a true low stick to counter Salado's front five, and Jarrell's balance gives them a real path to a top-five regional finish.

On the boys' side, Salado's four-deep front puts them squarely in the 4A title conversation; Burnet's compression is tailor-made for championship racing, and Lampasas' experience makes them a dangerous third qualifier. Individually, those ten girls above-and a similar group on the boys' side-now get a clean shot at the regional podium.
