The start of the 2025 UIL Region 4-3A girls race
The UIL 3A Girls Regional Championships unfolded this past week at four distinct sites across Texas, each presenting its own unique blend of course layouts, weather conditions, and challenges that influenced the dynamics of every race. While each athlete covered the same 3,200-meter distance, the diversity of terrain, from the windy, open spaces of Lubbock to the fast, urban loops of Arlington, the muggy Gulf air in Corpus Christi, and the mostly flat fields of Huntsville, ensured no two races played out the same way.
Weather played a significant role in shaping the competitive landscape. Some regions enjoyed cool, crisp conditions ideal for peak performance, while others faced heat, humidity, or gusty winds that tested the physical and mental resolve of competitors. These variables made it difficult to directly compare results across regions, but they also highlighted the adaptability and toughness of athletes across the state.
In the sections that follow, we recap standout performances from each region, not to measure one against the other, but to celebrate the depth of talent, tactical brilliance, and relentless grit shown by Texas 3A girls. Every athlete faced their own version of race-day adversity-and rose to meet it.
In a competitive showdown at the Region 1-3A Girls Cross Country Championships, Kenli Atwood of Holliday reaffirmed her dominance by defending her regional crown. The senior clocked a swift 11:36.60, pulling away early and never looking back. Atwood, last year's regional champion and state runner-up, was followed closely by teammate Sarah Spears (11:55.30), giving Holliday a commanding 1-2 punch up front.
Sky Phariss of Clyde was the top individual qualifier not on a state-bound team, finishing third overall in 12:09.10. Wall's McKenzie Lopez (12:17.70) placed fourth, while Holliday's depth continued to show with Avy Mauldin rounding out the top five in 12:19.50.
The top 10 featured a blend of experience and youth, with strong efforts from seniors like Hailey Von Willer (Jim Ned), Victoria Terrazas (Dalhart), and Addalynn Bourland (Peaster), as well as underclassmen like Selah Smith (Childress, 9th grade) and Liyah Reyna of Presidio.

In the team competition, it was total domination from East Bernard, the defending state runner-up, who left little doubt about their championship credentials. It was a commanding performance from Juliet Alcott of Great Hearts Northern Oaks, who pulled away from the field to win the individual regional title in 11:31.69, the fastest time in the region. She looks like a state title contender, and as an individual qualifier, she led a strong pack of unaffiliated runners headed to Round Rock.
The Poth trio of Brooklyn Albert, Katelyn Poth, and Chelsea Gorzell stayed close behind, finishing 2nd, 3rd, and 5th overall, respectively. Their presence in the top five was a key reason the Pirates came out on top in the team standings.
Also making noise up front was San Antonio Cole's Katherine Zinnante, placing 4th and helping guide her team to a third-place finish. Frances Scotello of Lytle (6th place) was the leading runner for a Pirate squad that battled for the team crown but ultimately finished second.
