COLLEGE STATION WAS IN A DIFFERENT WORLD
Andrew Jones, Dillon Mitchell, Joshua Shelton, and Ahlayna Taylor headlined a meet that made a strong early case for what this Texas outdoor season could become
The 2026 Texas A&M Bluebonnet High School Invitational ran Mar 7-8 at E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station. Two days of deep fields AND a Saturday that delivered several of the best performances the state has seen this early in an outdoor season. Here is what stood out.
Andrew Jones is Doing Things That Have Not Been Done
The headline belongs to Klein Collins senior Andrew Jones, and it is not particularly close.
On Friday in the 110-meter hurdles prelims, Jones ran 13.01 into a +6.2 wind - the fastest all-conditions time ever recorded at the high school level in the event, beyond the legal national record of 13.08 set by Wayne Davis in 2009. He then ran a controlled 37.72 in the 300H prelims, qualifying fourth behind Ian Hill of Iowa Colony (36.69), Steven Schwartz of Sealy (36.85), and John Harden of Bridgeland (36.88).
Fast forward to Saturday and Jones won the 110H final in 13.11 (+3.8), holding off Cadyn Key of Katy (13.30) and Houston Worthing sophomore Avonte Earl (13.49). Schwartz was fourth at 13.58. Tyler Drake of Katy Seven Lakes (13.90), Trevion Pettis of Cypress Woods (13.95), Timothy Rhine of Shadow Creek (14.01), Lancaster sophomore James Foster (14.05), and Joaquin Molina of Waxahachie (14.06) rounded out the final.
Then came the 300H final. Jones ran 34.94. Only Vance Nilsson of Gilbert, Arizona holds a faster high school mark - 34.83, set at the 2024 Arizona state championships, the first time any U.S. high schooler broke 35 seconds. Jones is now the second person ever to do it. Harden finished second in 36.02, Hill third in 36.37, and Schwartz fourth in 36.83. Michael Montoya of El Paso Franklin (37.57), Johnathan Greene of Hendrickson (37.81) and Jacobie Mims of Duncanville (37.92) followed behind.
A Look at the Boys 100M
Sheldon King sophomore Dillon Mitchell won the boys 100-meter final in 10.19 (+1.4), a new Bluebonnet meet record. It is the second-fastest wind-legal performance of Mitchell's career, behind his 10.17 at the UIL state meet last season, when he and training partner Chinweoke Onwuchekwa were finishing their freshman year as the fastest freshmen in U.S. history.
On Friday the wind conditions made the prelims difficult to parse - heats running with readings above +5.0 across the board. Mitchell ran 9.88 (+5.8), the third-fastest wind-aided time in U.S. high school history. Onwuchekwa ran 10.02 (+5.8) in the same heat. Justin Stewart ran 10.11 (+5.8). Servite (CA) junior Benjamin Harris ran 10.23. California sophomore Jorden Wells ran 10.28 (+5.2). Cypress Woods senior Sean Pina ran 10.25 (+3.1). Randle sophomore Jayson Smith ran 10.30. Bridgeland senior Jordan Harris and Northwest Nelson junior Macavion Hill both ran 10.32. Twenty-one boys ran 10.50 or faster in the prelims.
Saturday's final sorted things out under legal conditions. Mitchell 10.19. Onwuchekwa 10.31 in second. Wells 10.33 in third for a season best. Stewart fourth at 10.46. Pina fifth at 10.48. Smith sixth at 10.49. Jordan Harris seventh at 10.64. Benjamin Harris eighth at 10.67. Hill ninth at 10.67.
