Chasing History: The TAPPS Boys Records Most at Risk in 2026

 Let's explore the top boys heading into the 2026 postseason. 

 100 meter - The oldest individual record in all of TAPPS dates back to 1991 when Dallas Christian's Rod Washington ran a blistering 10.25. On March 19, 2026, Houston Briarwood sophomore Jack Abramson ran 10.38 at the Mustang Invitational. While still a stretch from running sub-10.25, Abramson is only a sophomore, so he does pose a legitimate threat to claiming the crown of a 35-year-old record. 

 200 meter - Luke Stevens of Fort Worth Christian is the current TAPPS leader in the 200 at 21.82. The junior ran this at the TCU HS Invitational on March 19th. The current all-time TAPPS 200-meter record holder hails from Austin St. Michael's. Jamerson Houston ran an impressive 21.44 in 2015. It's not inconceivable that Stevens can break this record, needing to drop his time only .39 to claim the title. 

 400 meter - The quarter-mile record has changed hands twice in the last five years: Cameron Bonner of Houston St. Thomas ran 47.98 in 2021, and last season, Andrew Wright of San Antonio Lutheran lowered this time to 47.60. Seniors Graham Freeman (Tomball Rosehill Christian) and Braden Belew of Midland Christian (48.57, 48.59, respectively) are the closest threats to turn over the record for a third time this decade. Either will have to drop almost a full second, but as the weather warms and the adrenaline rushes, one never knows if this is possible.

800 meter - Here's the strongest case for a broken record at the state meet thus far: Spring Providence Classical's Elijah Zuniga ran a 1:52.54 at the 43rd running of the Victor Lopez Classic at the end of March, and since the current TAPPS record is 1:53.07 by Antonian's Todd Worth in 2024, this record is already under attack. With good weather, Zuniga is a great bet to lower the TAPPS all-time 800 record

110h - Ewan Curtis of Argyle Liberty Christian ran a stunning wind-legal 13.48 last season. For his efforts, Curtis now competes at Baylor University. Jett Jackson of Plano John Paul II has a wind-legal 13.94 to his credit this season, and Owen Coates of Trinity Christian Willow Park has run 13.83 - no wind reading. While a wind-legal 13.47 isn't out of the question for either athlete, it'll take a Herculean effort to shave off ½ a second at the TAPPS State TF Championships.

300h - Ewan Curtis secured the double in the hurdles last season by running an impressive 36.17 in the intermediate hurdles. As of early April, Plano JPII's Jett Jackson is the only TAPPS 300 hurdler to run sub-38.00 at 37.86. He'll have to turn on the Jett fuel if he's going to run in the low 36s. 

4x100 - Houston St. Thomas, in 2025, lowered the sprint relay time set in 2019 by Dallas Bishop Dunne: 41.54 dropped to 41.35. As of early April, Tomball Concordia Lutheran has the top 4x100 time in the state at 41.72. The foursome of Carson Clark, Jaxon Coleman, Vincent Neuhaus, and Cody Cutrer have a great shot at capturing the 4x100 all-time record. 

4x200 - Austin St. Michael's set the 4x200 standard in 2013 with a time of 1:26.82. Tomball Concordia Lutheran has the top time in TAPPS in 2026 at 1:28.26 with three of the four who also run on the 4x100. James Urvan replaces Jaxon Coleman. Tomball Concordia will need to shave just under 1.50 seconds in order to snare the top time in the 4x200. 

4x400 - Tomball Concordia Lutheran holds the TAPPS all-time 4x400 relay time at 3:18.88, set in 2018. Holy Cross of San Antonio has this season's best time at 3:21.31, 2 ½ seconds from the all-time record, a tough challenge, but not impossible. 

High Jump - Over the last five years, TAPPS has seen an explosion of talented high jumpers, those jumping 6' 6" or higher on a regular basis. This season there are three jumpers at 6' 6" and one at 6' 8" - Finn Klein of St. Dominic Savio. He cleared this bar on February 21st at the McGregor Bulldog Relays. If he's capable of clearing another bar, he can tie Jesse Imemba's (The Village) all-time mark of 6' 10". At that point, he'll be able to set the bar to his liking and raise the bar to an all-time record.

Long Jump - Twenty-five feet and one-half of an inch!

Skye Dawson of Dallas Christian flew to this incredible distance back in 2009. In 2026, the furthest anyone has jumped is 23' 5" by Emmanuel Johnson of Flower Mound Coram Deo. While an outstanding jump, this is still over 1 ½ feet from nearing the record, a mark that appears safe for another year. 

Triple Jump - For those knowledgeable of the horizontals in Texas, they know the name Kenny Roseman, holder of the TAPPS all-time triple jump mark at 48'07.50" back in 2009. A graduate of Trinity Christian Cedar Hill and a jumper at Boise State, Roseman runs the successful Jump Smart Texas. The top jump in 2026 is 44' 07.50" by Rye Roberts of New Braunfels Christian Academy. While approaching 45' is the goal for male jumpers, a four-foot gap will be difficult to close.  

Discus / Shot Put - In 2008, Alex Adams of Colleyville Covenant Christian ruled TAPPS. He threw the discus 177' 05" and tossed the shot 62' 03". Today, the throwing capital resides in Midland at Midland Classical Academy and Midland Christian.

Sophomore Barron Tate of Midland Classical Academy has a personal best of 172' 06" after ending his freshman campaign at 163' 06". Improving five feet to ascend the all-time TAPPS discus ladder looks to be a sure bet, especially since Tate has two more years if he doesn't achieve the mark this season. Rowdy Pearce of Midland Christian has surpassed 60' in the shot put with a current PR of 60' 02.50". All it takes is one monster throw and the all-time mark is his.
