Andrew Malan captures the UIL 5A Boys 3200m title
The UIL 5A boys 3200-meter championship developed into one of the most tactical and dramatic distance races of the meet after entering Austin without any returning medalists from the 2025 podium.
With no clear dominant favorite, the field featured several evenly matched contenders led by Frisco Lebanon Trail senior Andrew Malan, Dayton senior Jaxon Asbill, Aledo junior Tyler Connelly. Unlike the aggressive pacing seen in many recent state finals, the early stages unfolded conservatively as Connelly led the tightly packed field through 800 meters in a comfortable 2:23-2:25 range. The controlled tempo kept all nine runners within striking distance well past the midpoint of the race.
By 1200 meters, the field remained compact at 3:33-3:34 pace, and the tactical nature of the race became increasingly apparent. Connelly continued to control the front while runners such as Asbill, Joshua Loera, and Matthew Morales steadily moved up through the pack. The field reached the mile in approximately 4:44 with virtually every runner still in contention, turning the championship into a final-kilometer battle rather than a time trial.

With three laps remaining, Connelly still held the lead, but Asbill and Malan began positioning themselves for a decisive move. At 600 meters to go, Asbill surged to the front and attempted to break the race open, but Malan remained glued to his shoulder while Connelly refused to fade. As the leaders approached the bell lap nearly three-wide, Malan finally made his move. The Lebanon Trail senior accelerated entering the final lap and immediately created separation with a devastating change of pace. Although Asbill responded and tried to stay attached, Malan's move proved perfectly timed.
Closing with a blistering 58.12 final lap, Malan sprinted away to capture the state championship in 9:08.32, one of the fastest times in the state this season. Asbill also closed hard and finished second in 9:09.71, while Connelly held on for third in 9:15.33 after leading much of the race. Grapevine's Andrew DeYoung and North Mesquite's Loera rounded out a deep top five in a race where patience, positioning, and closing speed ultimately proved more important than early pace. While the championship did not approach classification record performance, it instead delivered a masterclass in tactical championship racing, and in the end, Malan's final lap was simply too strong for anyone to answer.
