Austin LBJ 4x100 relay members embrace after running mid-40-point in the 4x100 relay to win the UIL 4A title
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
Austin LBJ entered the 2026 UIL 4A boys 4x100 relay final as the defending state champions, but despite winning the 2025 title in 41.04, there was still a lingering feeling that the Jaguars never fully showcased just how fast they truly were. Last year's championship race hinted at a team capable of threatening the elusive 40-second barrier, and throughout the 2026 season, LBJ looked determined to remove any doubt about their sprint dominance in Class 4A. With a loaded field entering the state meet, including talented squads from Stafford, Henderson, Brock, Andrews, and Madisonville, the race promised both speed and drama from the opening gun.

Out in lane nine, Brock exploded to an aggressive early start and immediately put pressure on the stagger. Meanwhile, Austin LBJ in lane seven methodically built momentum through the curve and exchanges, looking smooth and composed as the race developed. The Jaguars' chemistry and sprint efficiency became more apparent with each baton pass, and by the anchor leg they had clearly positioned themselves to take control. The quartet of Javarlyn Smith, Louis Hickman Jr., Josiah Covington, and Ladainian Green powered home in 40.60, delivering one of the fastest times in the state this season and fully asserting themselves as the premier sprint relay program in 4A.
Behind LBJ, the race for the medals remained tightly contested. Stafford finished second in 41.33, followed by Henderson at 41.51 and Brock close behind in 41.54 after their blazing opening leg. Andrews rounded out the top five in 41.62, while Madisonville dipped under 41.70 as well. In total, six teams broke 41.70, highlighting the overall depth of the classification. But the night belonged to Austin LBJ, whose performance not only defended their state title, but finally displayed the level of speed many believed they possessed all along.
