The Waxahachie Life anchor (#3622) holds off the entire field to win the 4x200 relay state title
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
The UIL 4A boys 4x200-meter relay final entered Austin with Austin LBJ carrying the target after their 2025 championship performance of 1:25.55, a race that broke the long-standing classification state meet record of 1:24.61 previously held by Waco La Vega. With much of that championship speed returning, LBJ once again looked like the favorite to control the event.
But from the moment the gun fired in the 2026 final, it became clear the Jaguars would have company. In lanes six and seven, Waxahachie Life School and Austin LBJ immediately separated themselves from the field, matching each other stride for stride through the opening exchanges and quickly establishing the race as a two-team battle.
The relay unfolded with high-level execution from both programs. Through the second exchange, neither team could create meaningful separation, as the stagger kept the race visually tight around the curve. On the third leg, LBJ appeared to gain a slight advantage entering the handoff zone, with their baton exchange carrying momentum into the anchor leg. However, Waxahachie Life School's positioning on the inside stagger proved critical. The tighter turn and strong exchange propelled the quartet of Tre'Shaun Smith, Micah Walker, Tyler Lott, and Kendall Smith into the lead just as the anchors hit the final straightaway.
UIL 4A Boys 4x200 Relay
From there, Life School never gave the lead back. Their anchor leg held off the hard-charging burners from Austin LBJ to secure the state championship in 1:25.66, one of the fastest times in the classification this season. LBJ finished runner-up in 1:26.16, while China Spring added another strong relay performance to claim third in 1:26.57. Brock followed in fourth at 1:27.04, giving the race four teams under 1:27.1.
Although LBJ was unable to repeat as champions, the final once again highlighted the elite sprint relay depth within UIL 4A. Waxahachie Life School executed flawlessly under pressure and used superior positioning on the final exchange to edge one of the state's premier sprint programs. In a race loaded with speed and championship pedigree, it was Life School that emerged with the gold medal and one of the biggest relay victories of the meet.
