Dallas Carter's Charles Anderson sprints to the finish line for an 800m win
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
The 2026 UIL Boys 4A 800-meter final delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the state meet, featuring a furious closing sprint and a surprise champion emerging in the final meters. Entering the race, Salado's Daniel Anderson held the fastest qualifying mark in the field at 1:53.24, while the long-standing 4A state meet record of 1:51.84 set by Todd Harbour back in 1977 still loomed over the event. From the gun, the pace was smooth and controlled through the opening 100 meters before sophomore Graham Goggans from Marble Falls made an aggressive move from the far outside at the cut-in to seize the lead.
Goggans dictated the pace through the opening lap, hitting 400 meters in a quick 55.74 while the field stacked tightly behind him. Jacob Marquez sat comfortably in second at the bell after opening in 56.46, but the race began to unravel on the backstretch of the second lap as challengers surged from every direction. Goggans briefly lost the lead but continued battling as the entire front pack tightened entering the final curve.
Then came the decisive moment. While the attention centered on the leaders up front, junior Charles Anderson unleashed a stunning final charge. Sitting sixth at the bell in 57.93, Anderson steadily worked his way through traffic over the final 300 meters before exploding down the homestretch. With just 50 meters remaining, he stormed past the field to snatch the state championship in 1:54.57, closing in a blistering 56.65-second lap to complete one of the meet's biggest come-from-behind victories.
UIL 4A Boys 800m
Goggans held on valiantly for silver in 1:55.20, an outstanding performance for the Marble Falls sophomore after leading most of the race. Anderson of Salado finished third in 1:55.60, while sophomore Camden Paden was close behind in fourth at 1:55.88. Legend Williams also stayed in contention throughout and earned fifth in 1:57.36.
Kennedale's Juan Montes finished sixth in 1:59.57 after moving up during the second lap, while Marquez faded late but still managed seventh in 2:00.84 after his aggressive early positioning. Aidon Tijerina from Canyon placed eighth in 2:01.46, and Fredericksburg's Cody Helmers rounded out the field in 2:03.31.
The race perfectly showcased the unpredictability of championship 800-meter racing. Goggans controlled the pace early, Marquez challenged at the bell, and several contenders looked poised to strike late, but it was Texas A&M commit Charles Anderson's perfectly timed finishing kick that ultimately stole the spotlight and delivered Dallas Carter another thrilling state title.
