2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
The UIL 5A boys 110-meter hurdles final entered the 2026 state meet with the memory of one of the greatest hurdle races in classification history still fresh. One year earlier, Corsicana's Ja'Shaun Lloyd blazed a record-setting 13.20 to break Tony Brown's long-standing 5A state meet record of 13.40 from 2013. With Lloyd graduated and no returning medalists from the top four spots, this year's race appeared far more open on paper. The regional qualifying marks suggested exactly that, with multiple hurdlers clustered tightly between 14.04 and 14.25, setting up one of the most competitive hurdle finals of the meet.
When the gun fired, Belton junior Graham Chambley exploded out of the blocks from lane four and reached the first hurdle ahead of the field. Through the opening hurdles, Chambley looked in control with smooth rhythm and aggressive turnover. But by hurdle three, Angleton senior Traevonne Latimer began making a powerful move from lane seven. Carrying tremendous momentum between hurdles, Latimer quickly erased the slight lead and surged to the front midway through the race.
UIL 5A Boys 110-Meter Hurdles
Once in front, Latimer never relinquished control. He continued attacking the hurdles cleanly while separating from the field over the final barriers and sprinted away to capture the state championship in a wind-aided 13.50 (+3.6). Although the strong tailwind prevented the mark from challenging the record books officially, the performance still ranked among the fastest all-conditions times in the classification this season. Chambley held on for second in 13.79, while Amarillo Caprock senior Alhosan Sheriff edged Nacogdoches sophomore Braylon Horton for third, 13.91 to 13.93.
The race ultimately showcased both the depth and transition within UIL 5A hurdling following Lloyd's historic run a year ago. While no one approached the record-setting territory of 2025, Latimer's dominant finish and the tightly packed field behind him demonstrated that the event remains one of the strongest sprint hurdle classifications in the state.
