Dillon Mitchell clocks another sub-10-second win, this time for the UIL 6A title
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
In recent years, the UIL 6A boys' 100m dash has taken on epic proportions. Last year, Harlan's Tate Taylor ran a wind-legal national record time of 9.92 and then decided not to compete in UIL meets this year. In addition, a pair of freshmen, Dillon Mitchell (Sheldon King) and Chinwoke Onwuchekwa (Cypress Springs), each broke 10.20 seconds.
Fast forward to 2026, and Mitchell has taken a big leap forward and really appeared on the national stage after running a wind-aided 9.88 at the Texas A&M Bluebonnet Invitational. Onwuchekwa ran a 10.02 at the same event, and two returned once again to the State finals.
After the gun fired, Mitchell quickly moved to first place with Onwuchekwa running nearly stride-for-stride. In the final 20m, Onwuchekwa fell back slightly, which allowed a late-charging Charvis Tubbs (Humble) to swoop in for the silver medal behind Mitchell.
UIL 6A Boys 100m
Mitchell posted a time of 9.92 that tied Taylor's meet record from last year, but a +4.0 wind means it will not count as a national record. Tubbs fired across the line in 10.03, and Onwuchekwa finished in 10.12. Not to be forgotten are Tomi Tanski (The Woodlands), Folaramni Oyalami (Mansfield), and Macavion Hill (Northwest Nelson), who all ran faster than 10.25.
The top seven runners all broke 10.3, and the top eight runners were all under 10.4 seconds, matching the results from 2025.
