Adeline Bennett leads the top three girls in the UIL 6A 1600m

2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
The UIL 6A girls' 1600-meter championship once again delivered a tactical and highly competitive distance race as Lewisville Flower Mound continued its tradition of excellence in the event. One year after Alexandra Fox claimed the state title for Flower Mound, junior teammate Adeline Bennett stepped into the spotlight against a loaded field that included 3200-meter champion Macy Wingard, 800-meter champion McKale Lee, and the powerful Bridgeland trio of Hope Smith, Rowan Saacke, and Susana Rawls. With Natalie Cook's 6A state meet record of 4:40.29 still standing from 2022, the race developed more into a tactical championship battle than an all-out record attempt.
From the opening lap, Rawls and Wingard controlled the pace, bringing the field through 400 meters in 1:14.53 with the entire pack still tightly connected. Wingard gradually increased the tempo over the next 200 meters, reaching 600 meters in 1:52 while Saacke worked aggressively through the field to position herself alongside Bennett. Despite Bennett's known speed credentials as one of the strongest middle-distance runners in the field, the pace remained measured enough to keep nearly everyone within striking distance through the halfway mark at 2:28.78.

Wingard continued pressing the race through 1000 meters in 3:05, followed closely by Bennett, Smith, and Saacke. By the bell lap, the championship had narrowed to a three-runner fight as Wingard crossed first at 3:41.13 with Bennett and Smith directly behind her. Entering the final backstretch, Smith surged past Wingard, but Bennett immediately followed and positioned herself perfectly entering the final turn. With 100 meters remaining, Bennett and Smith separated from the field and sprinted side-by-side toward the finish line.
In the closing meters, Bennett's finishing speed proved decisive. The Flower Mound junior pulled away just enough to secure the state championship in 4:49.56, giving Flower Mound back-to-back 6A titles in the event. Smith finished only fractions behind in 4:49.89, while Wingard completed another outstanding state meet with a third-place finish in 4:51.08 after already winning the 3200 meters earlier in the meet.
The race showcased the incredible depth of girls' distance running in UIL 6A, with five athletes breaking five minutes and multiple championship-caliber runners still in contention entering the final lap. In the end, Bennett's perfectly timed kick and composure under pressure delivered Flower Mound another distance crown on the state's biggest stage.
