On the other side of the spectrum, Second Baptist UM-Cypress claimed its first girls team title. A closer look at both rosters suggests the Fredericksburg boys and Second Baptist UM-Cypress girls could find themselves atop the podium again in 2027.
Fredericksburg Heritage
The Eagles scored points in 13 of 17 events, with six athletes contributing in 10 individual events. Of the 10 athletes who scored points for Fredericksburg Heritage, only Benjamin Tabor - the lead leg on the 4x100-meter and 4x200 relays - is a senior. The rest of this year's state lineup featured four freshmen, four sophomores and one junior.
Fredericksburg Heritage has built a tradition of reloading talent to contend for team podium spots, and the future appears bright.
On Day 1 of the 2026 TAPPS State Track and Field Championships, the Eagles left Waco Midway's Panther Stadium with 63 points. Fields Culver placed fourth in the shot put, while Wyatt Craven and Zeke Shipman tied for fourth in the high jump. Case Baker finished sixth in the long jump, and Quatro Stewart won the triple jump.
Fredericksburg Heritage also continued its dominance in the pole vault, sweeping the top four spots. On the track, freshman Sean O'Fiel finished second in the 3,200 meters.
The Eagles added points in eight events on Day 2, including all three relays.
Fredericksburg Heritage opened the day with a runner-up finish in the 4x100 relay, as three underclassmen and Tabor posted a time of 44.77 seconds. Craven followed with a victory in the 110-meter hurdles, and Culver added a fifth-place finish in the 100 meters.
Using the same underclassman-heavy lineup from the 4x100, the Eagles captured gold in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:35.41. Craven later earned silver in the 300 hurdles, while Shipman added a fourth-place finish in the event.
Freshman Case Baker sprinted to a second-place finish in the 200 meters, and Fredericksburg Heritage closed the meet with a runner-up finish in the 4x400 relay behind a lineup of three sophomores and one junior.
The Eagles finished with 144 points, 75 ahead of runner-up The Oaks Christian Academy.
Second Baptist UM-Cypress
The Eagles of Second Baptist UM-Cypress also showcased a strong youth movement while claiming the top spot in the TAPPS 1A girls division. Of the nine athletes who scored points, only Sawyer Pontin graduates.
Second Baptist UM-Cypress edged Azle Christian by three points, winning the team title 85-82. While Azle Christian dominated the sprints, Second Baptist UM-Cypress balanced the competition with strong performances in the distance and field events.
Second Baptist UM-Cypress scored points in 14 of 17 events, with six athletes contributing in 11 individual events.
By the conclusion of the 3,200 meters on Day 1, the Eagles had accumulated 65 points, highlighted by three event titles: Brielle Wylie in the discus, Katie Hirth in the high jump and Brielle Bryant in the 3,200.
Bryant, a freshman, went on to win the 800 and 1,600 as well.
Although Azle Christian controlled the short sprints, Second Baptist's Zoe Hedlund earned silver in the 400 meters to get the sprint group on the board. Junior Katie Hirth added fifth- and fourth-place finishes in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, respectively.
The relays ultimately proved decisive.
Azle Christian won the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, while Second Baptist countered with sixth- and third-place finishes in those events. Second Baptist also placed fourth in the 4x400 relay, while Azle Christian did not field a team in the event, limiting its ability to make up points in the meet's final race.
Like Second Baptist UM-Cypress, Azle Christian returns a young roster, setting up what could be a compelling battle for the 2027 TAPPS 1A girls state track and field championship.
