Frances Koons red-shirting cross country following August 7 surgery for kidney cancer. Don Rich Aug 19, 2007

\"\"

Four-time Villanova all- American, former PA state champion and Foot Locker all- American Frances Koons will be training again before the 2007 cross country season concludes. But she won't be a part of this year's campaign after being diagnosed earlier this summer with clear cell renal cell carcinoma, followed by surgery to remove a tumor on her left kidney.

The tumor − the size of a ping pong ball − was removed with the least invasive type of surgery (laparoscopy) at North Shore University Hospital on Long Island, New York. Her surgeon is a pioneer in laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Kidney cancer develops most often in people over 40, but no one knows the exact causes of this disease. While there are several risk factors associated with the disease, like smoking, obesity, and high blood pressure, Koons did not fit the typical patient profile.

Garth\'s Run Across PA is raising thousands for Canton\'s track - and gave Garth a nice base for XC. Don Rich Jul 16, 2007

Garth Watson finishing 15th in AA at the 2006 PIAA State XC Champs - Photo by Don Rich

Garth's Run Across PA is the senior project, track-building, fundraising brainchild of Canton HS rising senior Garth Watson. Canton is a small town in north central PA. Despite the track team's accomplishments in recent years (champs of the Northern Tier League six of the past seven years), the school has never had an all-weather track.

Plans are underway to have the track finished by next spring, but Garth wanted to so something to help with the funding. So... coming off a state medal performance by taking 7th in the AA 3200 at PIAA States, he decided to combine academics (school credit), training (386 miles) and fundraising ($14,500 and climbing) in one very long run from border-to-border, up the mountains and down into the valleys of PA.

You can follow Garth's June 10-July 3 386 mile journey in quite a few ways. Listen to the interview following his run; check out the map of his journey; read his journal, and then make a donation. And for those wondering how Garth did in XC the past two years, he was 45th in AA as a sophomore, and 15th this past year. We think he has the start on a great summer of base... not to mention he hill work he got in...

70% HE MEETS ARE IN: HyTek elite marks have been processed. Non-HyTek meets will have to wait until we have time. Look for new meet highlights and results through Monday, then it's the majority of the PIAA District meets.

Editor's Note: Over 40 League and Conference meets this week all around the state. Thanks to Hannah Granger, Aris Polites, Chris Roe and Mike Schmittlein, we FINISHED entering last week's elite marks from 22 meets into the rankings (Non-HyTek/RaceTab meets have to be entered by hand). And we are doing best to keep up this week. All HyTek meets are being processed for rankings within a few hours of being received. I went to the District 12 AAA track finals at Northeast HS on Friday. I will then be on the road to the District 6 AA meet in Altoona on Tuesday, back home to keep up with Districts coverage, and then to District 3 on Friday and District 1 on Saturday. Wow, did this season go fast! Not as fast as Brandon and Ryann and Chanelle and Paul... but fast, nonetheless.

Highlighting the weekend... The weather was perfect. The venue perfection. The athletes primed to assault the record books of two states in the two-mile at the 2ND HENDERSON INV on 5/4. With the help of two Henderson runners, Boyertown's Jason Weller and each other, Colts Neck New Jersey's Craig Forys and Unionville's Paul Springer went one-two in what may be the best prep 2-mile race on PA soil. When the clock stopped, Forys ran 8:49.99, Springer 8:52.86 and Weller 9:08.42. Forys broke the 8:52.0 record held by Charlie Logan of Bernards in 1979. Springer broke the 8:56.56 2-mile record set by Lewisburg's Chris Spooner in 2004. Not to be lost in the state record atmosphere of the 2-mile race, Germantown Academy's Elliot Rhodes ran the top 800 time in PA with a 1:52.96. Rhodes led the race wire-to-wire. Henderson's Carly Hamond ran a solo 10:51.03 3200. Downingtown West's Christen Arnold leapt 18-07 to take the long jump and ran 12.25 to win the 100. Rustin's Alanna Owens won the shot put and discus. At BALDWIN, Breehana Jacobs, Laurel Highlands (in photo by Carl Strub), won three events, the 100 in 11.93, the 200 in 24.64 and the 400 in 55. 33. Soph AJ Hobart of Baldwin went 4:12.30 to win the 1600. And Chris Wolfe, also of Baldwin, ran 49.79 and 155.05 for the 400-800 double. The WEST CENTRAL COACHES MEET in Altoona always shows off the best talent in this region. As one person who saw the meet said, "The Seymours put on quite a show." The Seymours are Central Cambria sisters Carly and Kelsey. Junior Carly set two meet records, while freshman Kelsey set one of her own. The girls dominated everything from the 800 to 3200 and posted the best times of the day in those three events, whether AA or AAA. Kelsey was sub-2:19, Carly sub-4:59 and sub-10:41. United's Eric Skedel now has the #2 javelin throw of the season in PA, going 208-04. Derry's Amanda Palenchar cleared 12 in the pole vault.
