Boys Field/Multis

What To Watch:

Triple Jump: George Ranch senior Tylen Guidry is ranked in the Top-25 in the state in this event at 47’7”. We’ll see if he or anyone else in the field can push towards 48’.

Throws: We could see some very solid marks out of the boys’ competitions here. Both Brody Gowing and William Petersson are in the TX Top-10 in the discus. Gowing is just a few feet away from the Top-3, and if he can throw 185’+, he could move up the state rankings.Gowing is coming off a win at the AAU Region 17 meet and Petersson a 6th place finish at the World Youth Trials. For the shot put, Sterling Mungro threw a huge PR over 58’ a few weeks ago to move into the TX Top-10. If he keeps throwing that well, it will be difficult for anyone to challenge him, thought Kingwood senior Steven Johnson has thrown over 57’ in 2015.

High Jump: David Seastrunk will be the overwhelming favorite to take this event and clear the highest height of the meet. He’s now tied with a big group of athletes at TX #10 after a 2” PR to win the SouthWestern JO Meet at 6’8”.

Pole Vault: No dominant presence here in the Pole Vault, but it should be a very exciting competition. The top seeds all coming in right around 15’. If the weather is good this lineup could come down to early misses to decide a winner with James Manders, Tommy Lampman, Chad Horstmann, and Jimmie Vaughn having very similar seeds.

Decathlon: It was a huge performance at the Great Southwest Classic that threw Clark Griffith into the spotlight. The Taylor freshman surprised everyone to win the decathlon in a TX #3 6627. While the multis are typically dominated by upperclassmen, we could see a frosh battle in Abilene. His closest challenger coming into the meet will be freshman Sebatian Russi who is ranked 5th in the state, though with a lot of ground to make up. His winning point total from AAU Region 19 nearly 1000 pts back from Griffith.
