2A Girls 100m Hurdles

The 2A Girls 100m Hurdles ended up being a two-woman race between Lainey Jernigan of Goldthwaite and Kayanna Cox of Tenaha. The two juniors were running stride-for-stride until the final hurdle where Jernigan was able to pull ahead to win the gold medal.

Jernigan crossed the finish line in 14.62 while Cox grabbed the silver medal with a time of 14.81. The race featured four girls who were returning to the State meet, but all four were denied medals. Armiyah Castilleja of Bremond took home the bronze. Kami Drinnon of Vega was the only senior in the race and she finished in sixth.

2A Girls 300m Hurdles

Goldthwaite's Lainey Jernigan picked up her second gold medal of the day after winning the 2A Girls 300m hurdles. She was nearly stride-for-stride with Farwell's Kennedi Richey through the first five hurdles, but then she was able to pull away and finish in 44.12. Jernigan also won the 100m hurdles and was the runner-up in the 300m hurdles in 2022.

Richey ran an excellent race but stuttered over the last hurdle allowing a hard-charging Drew Stewart of Normangee to catch her at the finish line. Stewart, a freshman, was running in Lane 1 and submitted a furious charge to the finish to nab the silver medal in 45.10.

Gruver's Brenna Butler raced to a fourth-place finish in 45.60. It was the third consecutive year for her to finish in fourth place, just outside the medal stand.
