Girls 800m

State of the Action: Virtually every race at the Sheaner Relays had a crazy finish, and the girls 800m did not dissapoint. Baylee Nelson led through the beginning portion of the race before Karyss Betzen took over. Just when it looked like Betzen was going to power away to the win, Nelson put in a huge kick in the final 100m to battle with Betzen all down the home stretch in a race decided by mere tenths of a second! Nelson now ranked TX #8.

Girls 1600m

State of the Action: There was only one heat of the girls 1600m, but the depth in this obvious with 12 girls running 5:10 or better. It shaped up to be an interesting race. Virtually every athlete in the race either ran the 3200m Friday night, or the 800m a few minutes earlier, or in Aaliyah Miller's case a few heats of 400s.

An athlete like Miller will always enter a race like this with a target on her back. Even after running 400 prelims & finals, she went straight to the front of the race in the 1st 150m, leading the pack through the first quarter 68. Everyone else in the race looked content to let Miller do all the work at the front. Maybe sensing this, Miller eased off after the 800m point, forcing other girls to run at the front and do some pace setting.

Though the pace eased off subtantially, and Miller went straight back to the lead into the final lap and cranked it up a notch, stringing out the pack. Miller opened up a gap into the final 200m and looked to be in a position to easily take the win, but that's when 800m runner up Karyss Betzen put in a huge surge, chasing down the leader in the final 80m. Miller looked to tire down the home stretch, easing up in the final 15m, and as she slowed to stop her watch over the line, Betzen's crazy finish nearly pulled off the upset.

Girls 3200m

State of the Action: On the boys' side there were some clear favorites, but for the girls, this race was wide open with no dominant athlete entered. It made for an exciting race amongst the Top-6/7 finishers. As always there was a block of Southlake athletes in the mix, but as the race developed it was Ashley Johnson, Erika Dewitt, and Skyler Simin who separated themselves from the rest. Johnson took the win in a new PR as she ran under 11 for the first time in a career. Johnson & Dewitt now rank TX #9 & TX #10.

Shoutout to Sarah Odneal & Rianna Rudolph who row rank in the Top-10 All Time list at Southlake Carroll.
