Summer Training Blog Week 1: Abbey Santoro
Monday 7/18/16:
6:15 and my alarm goes off on Monday morning. I had to ride my bike three miles to get to practice which was a good warmup, but I was dreading the ride back especially because it is mostly all up hill. Today's run was an 8-mile long run which I ran by myself and hit 7:55, 7:01, 7:17, 7:27, 7:35, 7:35, 7:48, and7:45. Overall I felt pretty good during this run and am looking forward to the rest of summer training! Tomorrow a couple of my teammates and I leave for the Lutz Running Camp in Flagstaff, AZ for some altitude training. I'm excited to run there and get out of the Texas heat!

Woke up at 4:45 this morning in order to get to the DFW airport for my 7:15 flight. Of course, it's obligatory to forget something when you travel and I forgot probably two of the most important things: a toothbrush and my foam roller. Landed in Phoenix and then got on the flight to Flagstaff. Once we got situated in our dorms at NAU we did an easy 4-mile run and went to eat lunch. We got to talk to some of the HOKA NAZ Elite team and after that we headed out for a quick 2.5-mile run. We came back, ate dinner, and walked around downtown Flagstaff.
Total miles: 6.5
Wednesday 7/20/16:
Got up at 6:25 this morning and ate breakfast before hitting the trails for what was supposed to be a 6-mile run. Running at 9,000+ elevation for the first time was not as bad as we had thought it would be beside the bear warnings and until we got lost. My teammate and I were separated from the group and took a wrong turn ending up running around on the wrong trail until we eventually decided to get off the trail and run on the street. We had to stop and ask for directions from a random lady who was also running and another mile later we made it back to the parking lot where we had started. The run could have been worse and luckily we weren't attacked by any bears.
Total miles: 7

This morning we ate breakfast and drove to one of the many trails that Flagstaff has to offer. The first three miles were "a gradual uphill" but the views were amazing nonetheless and it reminded me of the scene from the McFarland USA movie at their state meet when they showed this hill:

Of course, when we turned around for the last three miles we were going downhill so it felt great. Despite going uphill for three miles this was actually the best I had felt on any of the runs we had gone on so far. After the run we came back and ate lunch, played some sand volleyball and hover pass then we ate dinner and played some ultimate frisbee and finished the night with 16 barefoot strides.
Totals miles: 7 (1 mile of strides)
Friday 7/22/16:
This morning we got up and ate breakfast as usual then loaded up in the van and drove to Lake Mary Road to watch Craig Lutz, Scott Fauble, and Ben Bruce from HOKA NAZ Elite do their workout. Once they finished we drove to Buffalo Park where we had our own workout. We did a two-mile warm up, stretched, and than ran two 2 mile tempos and 3.5-mile hill loops and finished off with a two mile cool down. We ate lunch after we got back and had a strength workout before dinner. We finished off the night with a three-mile shakeout run.
Total miles: 10.5
Saturday 7/23/16:
Today we had an easy 6-mile recovery run on the A1 trail. All of us were glad to have a recovery run because of the hard workout yesterday. After the run we took some pictures (because Keller girls social media game is #1 in Texas) and headed back to the dorms to rest a little before lunch. After lunch, we drove up the mountain to take a chairlift to the top to hike, but unfortunately, there was a storm rolling in right when we arrived so we weren't able to go. Later for dinner, we went to Martanne's Burrito Palace recommend to us by burrito King, Scott Fauble himself. After dinner, it was time to go back to the dorms and pack up all our stuff because we are leaving tomorrow.

Sunday 7/24/16:
Today was our last day of camp and for our final workout, we had a track workout at NAU Lumberjack Stadium. Before the workout, we had a mile warmup and did plyometrics to stretch out. The workout was 300, 200, 100 x2 with a 200m jog in between each interval. To finish off we did a 1200m cool down and 12 strides before heading back to the dorm to leave. This week was a great experience training at altitude and I could definitely get used to not running in the Texas heat! I just want to say thank you to Coach Lutz for putting on a great camp, it's one that I would recommend to anyone looking for a summer running camp.
