W2W4 In El Paso At District 1-6A

Sergio Cuartas 1600m Interview at El Paso Americas Invitational

El Paso Track and Field is shaping up to have a strong finish as all schools are running their best. With district now under way, we're seeing athletes all over the city driving themselves to push through District to hopefully make Area, Regionals and hopefully State.

A week and a half ago, we witnessed a new comer from El Paso Eastwood Sergio Cuartas run an impressive 4:36 in the 1600m. While only being a Freshman, Sergio has shown maturity throughout his season so far. When interviewed by Milesplit's own Jesus Ruiz, Cuartas gave a lot of credit to his coaches for helping him develop throughout the season and keep him focused and relaxed.  Some of his goals can be viewed in the video above. See what Sergio had to say about his 1600m run.

Some other athletes to look out for this coming week is El Paso Coronado's Grant Levesque, El Paso Franklin's Eva Jess, and El Paso Eastwood's Alan Barragan. Grant is one of the state's top Pole Vaulters with a height of 16-3 and has dominated the Hurdling scene throughout his high school career as well. He is also ranked in the top 50 in the 110H and top 75 for the 300H as well.

El Paso Franklin distance runner Eva Jess has had a fantastic season so far and is sure to give us real fireworks come District. She currently sits at #27 in Texas in the 1600m with a time of 5:08.46 and sit very comfortable at #14 in the 3200m with a great time of 10:58.54. She has proven herself to run with the best in Cross Country and this Track season she has not deviated from that position at all. Her dedication to her craft is visibly apparent when she steps foot onto the track.

One of the last athletes that you must see if you get a chance next week is El Paso Eastwood's Alan Barragan. Alan set the tone for this seasons' sprinters right out of the blocks and hasn't looked back since.  In events like the 100m and 200m, milliseconds are what these races come down to when deciding who is the fastest in the state.  He's managed to stay ranked in the top 100 for both events all season long and his coaches say his best is yet to come. Barragan says he intends on breaking his PR of a 10.81 in the 100m and a 21.72 in the 200m. He's shown his dependability against some of the state's best when he placed 2nd in the 200m and 3rd in the 100m at Arizona's Willie Williams Invitational.

As we come down to the final stretch of the 2018 Track and Field season. We are sure to be treated to a spectacle as Texas proves its dominance in the sport across all events. Be sure to tune in as results pour in next week covering some of the best running we will see all year!
